About Altertek
Altertek is a specialist UK battery technology company working at the forefront of lithium-ion battery systems, electronics integration and clean transport support.
We design, develop, manufacture, repair and refurbish advanced battery and electronics systems for customers across a range of demanding and technically interesting sectors. Alongside our well-established work supporting EV and hybrid battery systems for some of the UK’s best-known bus operators, we also deliver exciting engineering projects across sectors such as defence, subsea, automotive and specialist industrial applications.
This is a particularly exciting time to join Altertek. The company is growing quickly, expanding its engineering capability and developing its own battery-related products alongside its established customer project work. That means this role offers much more than isolated CAD design — you will be involved in real engineering challenges, hands-on product development, prototype builds, manufacturing improvements and systems that are used in the field.
We are looking for an experienced Electromechanical Design Engineer who wants to make a visible impact in a growing engineering business. You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, electronic and production teams to design practical, robust and manufacturable products that support electrification, energy storage, clean transport and other advanced technology sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take ownership of mechanical layouts, electrical integration, packaging concepts and system architecture.
- Produce 2D manufacturing drawings, BOMs and documentation suitable for manufacture, assembly and inspection.
- Design high-voltage and high-current interfaces between cells, busbars, contactors, fuses, connectors, PCBs, wiring looms and other electrical components.
- Work with the hardware engineering team to select suitable electrical and electronic components.
- Work with customers to understand system requirements and ensure battery and charger systems integrate effectively into their products or applications.
- Interpret customer specifications, industry standards and internal requirements to produce safe and compliant designs.
- Maintain a strong understanding of cell packaging, cell mounting, welding, bonding and interconnection techniques.
- Support prototype builds, hands-on assembly, testing, fault-finding and design iteration.
- Work with production teams to ensure designs are practical to manufacture, assemble, inspect, test and maintain.
- Carry out internal mechanical checks and testing against product requirements and specifications.
- Liaise with external suppliers and test houses for specialist manufacturing processes, prototyping, machining, fabrication and mechanical testing.
- Review and approve drawings, designs and technical documentation produced by others.
- Ensure appropriate consideration is given to mechanical safety, electrical safety, thermal behaviour, serviceability, durability and manufacturability.
Essential Experience and Skills:
- At least 5 years’ industry experience in electromechanical design, or at least 5 years’ mechanical design experience with a strong demonstrable understanding of electrical concepts.
- Experience designing industrial or high-technology products intended for real-world manufacture and use.
- Proficient in modern 3D CAD software, ideally SolidWorks.
- Experience producing manufacturing drawings, assemblies, BOMs and controlled engineering documentation.
- Good understanding of engineering drawing standards and best practice, such as BS 8888.
- Strong knowledge of design for manufacture, design for assembly, design for serviceability and design for maintainability.
- Good understanding of material properties, material selection, manufacturing processes and finishing methods.
- Ability to research and evaluate materials, components, suppliers and manufacturing techniques.
- Working knowledge of wiring looms, cable routing, termination methods, connector selection and wiring assembly principles.
- Practical workshop capability, with the ability to assemble, inspect, modify and test mechanical designs and prototypes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical solutions to technical challenges.
- Good organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a mixed-discipline engineering team.
- Self-motivated, proactive and capable of working with minimal supervision.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience working with lithium-ion batteries, battery packs, battery modules or battery systems.
- Experience designing products involving high voltage, high current, thermal management or electrical safety considerations.
- Experience with busbars, cell interconnects, contactors, fuses, connectors, cable assemblies or power electronics packaging.
- Experience working in an ISO 9001 environment.
- Experience with prototype development, product validation, mechanical testing or environmental testing.
- Familiarity with EV, hybrid, transport, energy storage, electronics, power systems or other safety-critical industries.
Benefits:
- Company pension
- Flexitime
- Private medical insurance
- Free parking
- On-site parking
- Additional days holiday for each year completed
- Casual dress (we will provide t-shirts/polo shirts with company logo, work boots and any PPE required for the role)
