Job Overview
The primary purpose of the role is to help transform ideas into practical business capability. Through research, analysis and innovation, the apprentice will support the development of new consultancy methodologies, digital tools, business opportunities and intellectual property that strengthen the Company's long-term competitive position.
Unlike a traditional apprenticeship, this role is not aligned to a single department or discipline. Instead, it provides the opportunity to work across strategy, innovation, business analysis, consultancy, infrastructure, property, regeneration, project management, funding, artificial intelligence and business development.
Working directly with senior leaders across the business, the apprentice will gain a unique understanding of how major infrastructure consultancy operates whilst developing the analytical, commercial and strategic skills required for a professional consulting career.
The role is intended to develop future consultants, innovators and business leaders who can combine technical thinking with commercial awareness and digital capability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategy & Market Intelligence
- Research UK transport, rail, infrastructure, property and regeneration markets.
- Monitor Government policy, legislation, funding and investment programmes.
- Research competitors, emerging markets and industry trends.
- Identify potential opportunities, risks and areas for diversification.
- Prepare concise research papers, market reports and management briefings.
- Support strategic planning and business development activities.
2. Business Analysis & Improvement
- Analyse business information to identify trends, opportunities and areas for improvement.
- Map business processes and identify opportunities for greater efficiency.
- Support the development of business cases and recommendations.
- Gather and analyse requirements from internal stakeholders.
- Develop options appraisals and recommendations.
- Support implementation and review of improvement initiatives.
3. Innovation & Digital
- Research emerging technologies and innovation within infrastructure and consultancy.
- Support the implementation of SLC's AI and digital strategy.
- Identify opportunities for automation and improved use of technology.
- Develop and maintain AI prompts, workflows and knowledge resources.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and their potential application within the business.
- Support pilot projects and digital transformation initiatives.
4. Business Development & Bids
- Research potential clients, markets and sectors.
- Monitor procurement pipelines and framework opportunities.
- Support opportunity qualification and prioritisation.
- Assist with bids, tenders and expressions of interest.
- Undertake research and evidence gathering for submissions.
- Support the development of methodologies, case studies and bid content.
- Maintain market and business development information.
5. Knowledge & Intellectual Property
- Capture lessons learned from projects and commissions.
- Maintain structured knowledge resources.
- Support development of reusable methodologies, templates and tools.
- Identify opportunities to develop intellectual property and new consultancy products.
6. Strategic Projects
- Support cross-business strategic initiatives.
- Work with Directors, Heads and senior consultants on specific projects.
- Prepare presentations, reports and briefing papers.
- Coordinate actions and information across project stakeholders.
- Track progress and provide updates to senior management.
7. Executive & Senior Management Support
- Undertake research and analysis requested by the MD and senior leadership.
- Prepare briefing notes and option papers.
- Support Board and management papers where appropriate.
- Attend selected strategic meetings and workshops.
- Present analysis and recommendations to senior colleagues.
Pay: £27,765.00-£32,000.00 per year
