Purpose of the Role
The Head Chef is responsible for the overall management of the kitchen, including menu planning, food preparation, stock control, food safety compliance, and working alongside the second chef. The successful candidate will create balanced and appealing menus that cater for a range of dietary requirements while maintaining excellent standards of hygiene, quality, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Kitchen Management
- Lead and manage the day-to-day operation of the kitchen.
- Prepare and cook nutritious meals for residents and staff.
- Develop varied weekly menus that promote health and wellbeing.
- Ensure meals are served on time and to a consistently high standard.
- Cater for special dietary requirements, allergies, intolerances, and cultural preferences.
Food Safety and Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with food hygiene legislation and best practice. Maintain a clean, organised, and safe kitchen environment.
- Complete and monitor all required food safety records and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
- Manage kitchen audits and inspections as required.
Stock Control and Budget Management
- Order food and kitchen supplies within agreed budgets.
- Monitor stock levels and minimise waste.
- Maintain accurate records of purchases and stock usage.
- Ensure effective rotation and storage of food items.
Team Collaboration and Support
- Work collaboratively with the second chef to ensure smooth day-to-day kitchen operations.
- Support effective communication and handovers to maintain consistency in food quality and service.
- Assist with the induction and training of new kitchen staff should the service expand in the future.
- Foster a positive, professional, and supportive working relationship within the kitchen and wider treatment team.
- Work closely with management and clinical staff to accommodate residents' dietary needs and preferences.
Client Experience
- Engage positively with residents and contribute to the therapeutic environment.
- Gather feedback regarding meals and make appropriate improvements.
- Support special events, celebrations, and seasonal menus.
Person Specification
Essential
- Previous experience as a Chef or Head Chef.
- Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Strong knowledge of food safety and kitchen management.
- Experience managing stock, ordering, and food budgets.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Reliable, professional, and adaptable approach.
Desirable
- Experience working within healthcare, residential care, rehabilitation, or hospitality settings.
- Knowledge of nutrition and dietary requirements.
Level 3 Food Hygiene qualification.
Pay: £13.50 per hour
