Responsibilities
- Plan and ensure meals are of a high quality, content, and are well presented.
- Ensure food safety guidelines are followed at all times in the preparation, cooking and hot holding of the meals.
- Liaise with care staff and residents where appropriate to ensure dietary needs are being met at all times, updating the resident’s food preference sheets as necessary.
- Ensure proper and cost-effective use of food.
- Be responsible for ordering food supplies in the absence of the Head of Catering.
- Ensure appropriate waste disposal of used foods and bags/bins emptied daily.
- Ensure a high standard of personal hygiene is maintained and that the personal hygiene of all staff within the kitchen is of the highest standard.
- Ensure that all areas of the kitchen including storage areas and all food preparation equipment are kept meticulously clean and tidy.
- Ensure all appropriate records are completed in accordance with Environmental Health Legislation and regulations.
- Check the quality of food items delivered to the kitchen e.g. correct delivery temperature, good shelf life, undamaged packaging, and observe stock rotation of provisions in refrigerators, freezers and store rooms.
- Ensure that all food is stored in a hygienic manner, at the correct storage temperature and date labelled.
- Use and clean all equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines; any defective equipment to be reported as per procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Must hold an up-to-date level 2 food hygiene certificate
- Previous experience of cooking for large numbers of people preferred (we have 54 residents)
- Prior experience of providing food in a care home or a similar setting
- Previous experience of catering for people who have special dietary requirements
- An affinity and genuine liking for older people
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong customer service skills
- Team player
- Pay attention to detail
- Flexible approach to working hours
- Satisfactory DBS check
