About the Role
We are looking for a Radiation Safety Barrier Person to support industrial radiography operations at Hinkley Point C. This safety-critical role is responsible for maintaining controlled exclusion zones during radiography activities, preventing unauthorised access, and ensuring compliance with radiation safety procedures and site requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain physical barriers around the radiography-controlled area.
- Prevent unauthorised persons from entering the exclusion/controlled area during radiography.
- Remain at the designated barrier/entry point throughout the exposure period.
- Maintain constant awareness of personnel and activities around the controlled area.
- Challenge and prevent any person attempting to enter the controlled area without authorisation.
- Maintain effective communication with the Radiographer and Radiography Supervisor.
- Follow instructions provided by the Radiographer/Radiation Protection Supervisor.
- Ensure warning signs, lights, barriers and other control measures remain correctly positioned and effective.
- Monitor access points and adjacent areas where there may be a risk of inadvertent entry.
- Immediately report any breach, attempted breach, unsafe condition or change in site conditions.
- Stop or prevent access if the radiography controls are compromised and immediately notify the responsible radiographer/supervisor.
- Maintain the integrity of the exclusion zone during exposure and until the area has been declared safe by the authorised radiography personnel.
- Comply with site rules, RAMS, local procedures and radiation protection arrangements.
- Attend required site inductions, radiation awareness training and competency assessments.
- Participate in toolbox talks and pre-job briefings.
- Maintain professional standards and demonstrate a strong safety culture at all times.
Essential Requirements
- Suitable experience working within an industrial/site environment.
- Good understanding of basic radiation safety principles.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to remain vigilant for extended periods.
- Confident challenging personnel who attempt to enter a controlled area.
- Physically capable of standing/walking around the designated barrier area for the duration of the operation.
- Willingness to work shifts, nights, weekends and overtime where required.
- Completion of the company's required Radiography Barrier Man / Radiation Safety Awareness training and competency assessment.
Desirable
- Previous experience supporting industrial radiography or NDT operations.
- Experience working on nuclear, petrochemical, construction or other high-hazard sites.
- Relevant site safety qualifications. (CCNSG)
- Familiarity with radiography exclusion zones, warning systems and controlled-area arrangements.
Important Note
This role supports the radiography team but does not replace the Radiographer or Radiation Protection Supervisor, who retain responsibility for radiation safety decisions and exposure control.
