The Credit Controller is responsible for managing customer accounts for two business entities, supporting timely collection of outstanding debt, maintaining accurate sales ledger records, and helping protect business cash flow.
The role requires a professional, customer-focused approach, strong attention to detail, and the ability to resolve queries promptly while maintaining positive working relationships with customers and internal teams.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and manage a portfolio of customer accounts to ensure invoices are paid in line with agreed payment terms.
- Proactively chase overdue balances by telephone, email, and written correspondence in a professional and timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of customer contact, payment promises, disputes, and agreed actions within the finance system.
- Issue statements, reminder letters, and copy invoices as required.
- Raise invoices when required, ensuring accuracy and timely processing in line with company procedures.
- Investigate and resolve invoice queries by liaising with customers, sales, operations, customer service, and finance colleagues.
- Allocate payments, support cash posting activities, and assist with reconciliation of customer accounts.
- Review aged debt reports and escalate high-risk, overdue, or disputed accounts in line with company policy.
- Support the assessment and review of credit limits, payment terms, and customer account information.
- Prepare regular credit control updates, debtor reports, and commentary for management review.
- Contribute to process improvements that reduce aged debt, improve cash collection, and enhance customer experience.
- Support month-end activities and wider finance team tasks as required.
- Ensure all activity complies with company policies, financial controls, and relevant legal or regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Previous experience in credit control, accounts receivable, sales ledger, or a similar finance role is desirable.
- Confident telephone manner with the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and assertively.
- Strong numerical skills and attention to detail.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and finance or accounting systems(Sage, Xero, Epicor).
- Ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines, and follow structured collection processes.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate and resolve account queries.
- Understanding of customer account management, aged debt reporting, and payment allocation processes.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and maintain constructive customer relationships.
Location
The successful candidate will be based at our Cannock site and live within a good commuting distance from that.
Ability to commute/relocate:
- Cannock WS11: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
