CAD Design & Drafting Engineer
£28,000+ starting salary | Permanent | Full-time | Monday–Friday | Early finish on Fridays
Ready to build your career in design and engineering?
Are you a curious, practical and creative problem-solver who enjoys turning ideas into accurate drawings and real-world equipment?
We’re looking for a CAD Design & Drafting Engineer to join our small, friendly design team and play a key role in the design and development of both standard and bespoke equipment used in the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) industry.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to develop their drafting and design skills, learn from experienced colleagues and build a long-term career in a specialist engineering sector.
The best part? You don't need previous NDT experience. We'll provide full in-house training to help you understand our products, industry and processes.
What you'll be doing
You'll become an important part of the design team, working on a variety of projects and helping bring ideas from concept through to finished equipment.
Your role will include:
- Creating and developing 2D CAD drawings for standard and bespoke equipment.
- Producing fabrication drawings for items such as box section frames and sheet steel components.
- Working closely with the team to discuss ideas, solve problems and develop practical design solutions.
- Supporting the design of equipment used by organisations ranging from small specialist businesses to major blue-chip engineering companies.
- Learning about the NDT industry and developing your technical knowledge through hands-on, in-house training.
- Contributing ideas and working collaboratively within a small, supportive design team.
No two projects are exactly the same, so you'll have the opportunity to learn, develop and take on new challenges as your experience grows.
What we're looking for
You'll be a natural learner who is genuinely interested in how things work and enjoys figuring out how to make ideas a reality.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has CAD skills, ideally using 2D AutoCAD Lite.
- Has a basic understanding of fabrication, particularly box section and sheet steel.
- Is comfortable using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Enjoys solving problems and finding practical solutions.
- Is curious, willing to learn and keen to develop new skills.
- Enjoys working as part of a close-knit team and contributing ideas — we're big believers in bouncing ideas off each other.
Skills that would be a bonus
You don't need these skills to apply, but experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- 3D SolidWorks
- Mechanical engineering or fabrication
- Pneumatics
Most importantly, we're looking for someone with the right attitude and a genuine desire to learn.
What you'll get in return
- £28,000+ starting salary, depending on experience, with room for negotiation.
- Clear opportunities for salary progression as your skills and experience develop.
- Permanent position following successful completion of your 6-month probation.
- Full in-house training — no previous NDT experience required.
- Two 1% bonus payments in April and September.
- A discretionary bonus in November following 12 months of employment.
- The chance to build a career in a specialist and genuinely interesting engineering sector.
- The opportunity to work in a small, friendly team where your ideas and contribution matter.
- A role where you can continue to learn, develop and take on more responsibility over time.
