Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Supervisor with a strong background in the power generation or Energy from Waste (EfW) who is looking to take the next step in their career and develop into a Project and Outage Coordinator role.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for a technically capable and experienced mechanical professional to build upon their hands-on engineering knowledge while gaining increasing responsibility for the planning, coordination and delivery of maintenance projects, plant outages and major engineering activities.
The successful candidate will have a sound understanding of power generation processes, mechanical plant and heavy industrial equipment, together with practical experience of maintenance, repair and overhaul activities within an operational plant environment. You will initially provide technical and coordination support across projects and outages, progressing towards taking ownership of defined work packages and ultimately coordinating larger project and outage activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning, preparation and execution of planned and unplanned maintenance outages.
- Assist with the development and coordination of mechanical work scopes, project plans, schedules and work packages.
- Provide practical mechanical engineering knowledge during the planning and delivery of maintenance and project activities.
- Coordinate contractors, specialist service providers and internal maintenance teams to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
- Review work scopes and identify labour, materials, tooling, lifting requirements, specialist services and other resources required for successful delivery.
- Assist with the preparation of outage schedules and ensure activities are appropriately sequenced and coordinated.
- Monitor progress against agreed project and outage schedules, identifying potential delays, conflicts or emerging issues.
- Participate in plant inspections, condition assessments and pre-outage surveys to support the development of accurate work scopes.
- Ensure mechanical activities are completed in accordance with site procedures, engineering standards, manufacturer recommendations and relevant statutory requirements.
- Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Health & Safety, Procurement and contractor teams throughout project and outage delivery.
- Support contractor mobilisation, site inductions, work-area coordination and daily progress meetings.
- Assist with technical evaluation of contractor quotations, scopes of work and engineering proposals.
- Monitor the quality of completed work and support inspection, testing, commissioning and return-to-service activities.
- Ensure changes to scope, additional works and technical issues are appropriately documented and communicated.
- Support the management of project and outage costs, including contractor expenditure, materials and additional works.
- Produce clear progress updates, completion reports and post-outage documentation.
- Participate in outage and project reviews, capturing lessons learned and identifying opportunities to improve future delivery.
- Develop the planning, commercial and coordination skills required to progress into full responsibility for project and outage coordination.
Candidate Requirements
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Significant practical experience as a Mechanical Supervisor, Mechanical Fitter, Maintenance Technician or similar mechanical engineering professional within the power generation, Energy from Waste or biomass sector (5 years +).
- Direct experience working within a power generation or similar continuous-process plant environment.
- A strong understanding of heavy mechanical plant, maintenance techniques and engineering practices.
- Familiarity with power generation processes and the interaction between mechanical equipment, plant operations and maintenance activities.
- Experience working on equipment such as pumps, valves, gearboxes, conveyors, fans, compressors, steam systems, boilers, turbines and associated balance-of-plant equipment.
- Practical experience of planned maintenance, breakdown repair, major overhauls and plant outages.
- Experience working with contractors and specialist engineering service providers.
- The ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical documentation, equipment manuals and maintenance specifications.
- A strong understanding of safe systems of work within a heavy industrial environment, including permit-to-work systems, isolation procedures, risk assessments and method statements.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple activities and priorities within demanding outage or project timescales.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to engage effectively with technicians, engineers, contractors, operations personnel and management.
- A proactive and practical approach to problem solving.
- Good computer literacy and the ability to develop competency with maintenance management, project planning and reporting systems.
- A recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship, NVQ, City & Guilds, HNC/HND or equivalent technical qualification.
- Willingness to travel around the UK to support projects and outages.

- Steam raising plant and boiler systems.
- Steam turbines and associated auxiliary equipment.

- Major shutdowns or statutory plant outages.
- Mechanical installation or refurbishment projects.

- CMMS maintenance management systems.
- Project planning software and outage scheduling.
- CDM and contractor management requirements.
Career Development
This role is specifically suited to an experienced mechanical technician who wants to progress beyond a purely hands-on maintenance position while continuing to use their technical knowledge.
The successful candidate will receive exposure to the complete project and outage lifecycle, including scope development, planning, scheduling, contractor engagement, procurement, execution, cost control, commissioning and close-out.
As capability and experience develop, the role will progress towards increased ownership of work packages and smaller projects, with the objective of developing into a Project and Outage Coordinator capable of independently planning and coordinating significant engineering activities and plant outages.
The Person
We are looking for an individual who combines strong practical engineering experience with the ambition and capability to develop into a coordination and project delivery position.
You should be comfortable working in a demanding heavy industrial environment and understand the importance of safety, plant reliability, quality, cost control and schedule adherence. You will need to be organised, technically credible and able to build effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
