About Us
Sheldon Inns Ltd is a well-established hospitality business operating multiple licensed premises across the West Midlands. We are seeking an experienced and proactive Bookkeeper to join our Head Office team.
This is a varied and responsible role, managing the day-to-day bookkeeping and financial administration for two companies. The successful candidate will work closely with the Office Manager and our external accountants to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
The Role
This is a busy, hands-on role supporting the finance function for two companies operating multiple licensed premises. The successful candidate will maintain high-volume financial records, processing approximately 34,000 accounting transactions per month through Sage while ensuring accuracy, efficiency and compliance with statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Processing supplier invoices and maintaining purchase ledgers.
- Posting and reconciling daily and weekly takings from multiple sites.
- Reconciling multiple bank accounts.
- Processing supplier payment runs and maintaining payment records.
- Preparing and submitting accurate VAT returns for two companies.
- Posting weekly payroll journals supplied by the external payroll provider.
- Maintaining aged debtor and aged creditor ledgers.
- Business plan financials.
- Preparing and posting monthly journals, including:
- Accruals
- Prepayments
- Depreciation
- Hire purchase and finance interest
- Maintaining the fixed asset register, including:
- Asset additions
- Disposals
- Depreciation
- Property assets
- Accounting for mortgages, bank loans and hire purchase agreements, including associated journal postings and reconciliations.
- Assisting with the preparation of monthly management accounts and cash flow information where required.
- Liaising with external accountants for year-end accounts preparation.
- Communicating with banks, suppliers and other external organisations when required.
- Maintaining accurate financial records using Sage Accounts.
- Providing general finance support to the Office Manager and Director.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Bookkeeper who is organised, accurate and able to manage a varied workload.
Essential Skills & Experience
- AAT qualified (Level 4 or equivalent) – essential.
- Previous experience in a bookkeeping or accounting role.
- Strong working knowledge of Sage Accounts.
- Experience preparing and submitting VAT returns.
- Excellent understanding of double-entry bookkeeping.
- Experience with bank reconciliations, journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
Desirable
- Experience within the hospitality, leisure or licensed trade.
- Knowledge of fixed asset accounting and finance agreements.
- Experience assisting with management accounts and year-end processes.
