We are recruiting for a part-time Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities to join our City and South Oxfordshire Learning Disability Service based at our Lambourn site in Abingdon and Slade Site in Oxford.
You will work closely with an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and physiotherapy colleagues. The role offers a varied and fulfilling caseload, supporting adults with learning disabilities who may also experience mental illness, autism or epilepsy, and working in partnership with families, carers, primary care and social services.
Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training with two years in a relevant specialty, along with a genuine commitment to compassionate, collaborative care.

Asses and treat out-patients with a learning disability and/or co-morbid mental illness, autistic spectrum disorders or epilepsy. You will have responsibility for the patients you see, as well as for those patients seen by medical staff whom you directly supervise.
Support the care of adults with a learning disability by developing strong partnership with other agencies and services, including social care, primary care and voluntary agencies
Work alongside the clinical supervisor and multidisciplinary team to ensure the effective functioning and development of the service
Engage with 1 hour per week clinical supervision in line with the trust supervision policy
Contribute to CPA, professionals or multidisciplinary meetings for those patients under your care
Provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, on-going management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records system.
On-call duties across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire – candidates must have sufficient mobility and access to reliable transport to fulfil the requirements of the role.
This is a supportive post with regular consultant supervision, protected time for professional development and strong encouragement to pursue continuing professional development, teaching and service improvement. In July 2017, all adult services for people with learning disability in Oxfordshire transferred from Southern Health, to Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. The largest transfer was of Community Learning Disability (LD) services, supporting around 670 people with a Learning Disability aged over 18, their families, friends and carers, as well as other care providers. This has three teams covering the north and south of the county and Oxford city. These are further enhanced by an Intensive Support Team for a small number of people who have additional needs and may be at risk of admission to an inpatient unit.
Since October 2018, the Trust’s services are organised and managed on the basis of four clinical directorates: two all age mental health directorates, one for Oxfordshire /BSW and the other for Buckinghamshire in addition to Community Services and Specialised Services (including forensic mental health, dentistry, learning disability and pharmacy). All clinical services are developed in line with National policy guidance. The service models adopted by the Trust support a strong focus on flexible community provision by comprehensive multi-disciplinary services backed up by effective day services and inpatient facilities. In common with many other mental health trusts, Oxford Health Foundation NHS Trust’s use of inpatient facilities has been streamlined progressively in recent years through increasing efficiency, allowing a significant reduction in bed numbers.
Medical staff have contributed significantly to service developments, service redesign and efficiency programmes within the Trust, and to the related development of primary care mental health services. An active programme of organisational and service development is well under way. This supports coherent care pathways through primary care, secondary care and, when necessary, specialist clinical services and services provided by other agencies. Consultant psychiatrists are encouraged to contribute to this developmental work.
