Position: Waste Management Driver
Location: Stanley Industrial Estate, Skelmersdale, WN8 8EE
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 2+ Months
Working Hours: 36 hours per week
Pay Rate: PAYE: £17.08 per hour
Job Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a small refuse and recycling crew on daily waste collection rounds
- Drive refuse collection vehicles safely and efficiently in line with scheduled routes
- Ensure all waste and recycling collections are completed on time and to service standards
- Carry out manual handling duties including lifting, loading, and emptying waste containers
- Support the team with operational tasks such as bin retrieval, sorting, and site cleanliness
- Conduct basic vehicle checks and report defects or maintenance issues promptly
- Ensure compliance with health & safety procedures at all times, including PPE usage
- Provide guidance and on-the-job direction to team members during shifts
- Deal professionally with members of the public when required
- Complete relevant paperwork, logs, and digital reporting accurately
Requirements
Must Have
Experience
- Previous experience in waste management, refuse collection, or similar manual labour environment
- Experience in driving or operating heavy goods or refuse vehicles (as applicable to role)
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to lead or support a small operational team
- Strong awareness of health & safety practices in a manual handling environment
- Ability to follow routes, schedules, and operational instructions accurately
- Physically fit and able to perform heavy manual work
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
Qualifications & Certifications
- Full UK Driving Licence (appropriate category for refuse vehicle, e.g. Class 2/HGV where required)
- Valid Driver CPC qualification (if driving HGV vehicles)
- Digital Tachograph Card (if applicable)
- Previous experience as a team leader or chargehand in waste or environmental services
- Familiarity with local authority waste collection operations
- Training in manual handling, health & safety, or COSHH awareness
- Experience working in public sector or council environments
- First aid training
- Experience using in-cab technology or digital route systems
