Stantonbury School is looking to recruit a senior science technician to lead the science technician team in supporting teachers delivering the Science curriculum so that we promote active engagement and enjoyment of the subject.
Key Responsibilities
1. To carry out preparatory work for science lessons and where appropriate support students in practical lessons and demonstrations
2. Ensure that relevant health and safety procedures that relate to science education are carried out and arrange appropriate training.
3. Ensure the availability of suitable materials and equipment for use by the science department.
Specific responsibilities relating to each key area.
1. To carry out preparatory work for science lessons and where appropriate support students in practical lessons and demonstrations
- Liaise with teaching staff to understand the requirements of the practical lesson.
- Preparation of resources and assembling apparatus
- Providing technical advice and support to teachers relevant to the particular practical lesson
- Be prepared to support in class with students undertaking practical science activities and to carry out practical demonstrations to classes.
- Carry out risk assessments for technician activities and practical lessons/experiments.
2. Ensure that relevant health and safety procedures that relate to science education are carried out and arrange appropriate training.
- Implement and disseminate all appropriate health and safety legislation and guidance with respect to science education.
- Implement COSHH and chemical control requirements.
- Take on the role of the Radiation Protection Officer (RPO)
- With the Head of Faculty, contribute to the assessment, monitoring and review of both health and safety procedures and information resources.
- Ensure that laboratories and the prep rooms are kept to a high standard of tidiness, cleanliness, safety and operational readiness.
- Conduct regular checks of laboratories, resources and equipment to ensure lessons can take place effectively.
- Keep up to date with good practice guidance from CLEAPPS and disseminate to the science teams where appropriate.
3. Ensure the availability of suitable materials and equipment for use by the science department.
- Liaising and negotiating with suppliers to ensure that best value is achieved.
- Monitor stock levels and make orders when required.
- Liaise with science teachers to plan future purchasing to meet the needs of the curriculum.
- Routine checking of equipment ensuring it is all in good working order and ready for the next lesson.
- Calibration and maintenance of instruments where appropriate
- Carry out or arrange repairs to equipment.
General responsibilities
- To attend science department meetings when required
- To supervise the behaviour of students and to be “on duty” outside lesson times according to the agreed rota.
- To participate in any relevant training
- Be a qualified first aider (training provided)
- Undertake the role of fire marshal (training provided)
- Help with the preparation of resources for open evening and attend if required.
- Responsible for line management and continuing Professional Development of Science Technicians.
- The duties of the post may vary from time to time without changing the general character or the level of responsibility involved.
- Carry out all duties in a safe manner and in line with current school policies.
This role is 40 weeks per year.
