Job Overview
*Will suit self-employed, articulate, experienced tradespeople who are very comfortable in front of customers, enjoy problem-solving, are determined to get the job done properly, know how to run a project and can manage themselves and others to a high level. Work is typically 1-3 days per week, ad-hoc, project by project.*
We install floor insulation – sometimes lifting the boards, but often working from below, within the crawl space under traditional timber suspended ground floors. These spaces can be roomy but are often tight squeezes – so you must be slim, relatively small in stature and totally comfortable working in confined spaces – able to get through holes in sleeper walls and floorboards no bigger than a piece of A3 paper!
You will be working with a small, friendly, determined team, mostly around South and West London (occasionally further afield). You will be in full, provided PPE: overalls, full face mask/respirator, balaclava, arm guards, knee pads, and will wriggle around under floors to cut mineral wood insulation slabs, fit between the floor joists and staplegun wire mesh to secure it. It is absolutely crucial that you have a built-in desire to do a proper job, efficiently: rigorously installing the insulation into all corners and edges and never cutting corners.
In some cases, where there isn't enough space to get under the floor, we will lift the floorboards to install from above. This requires the confidence to do so, working quite delicately and with a problem-solving, can-do mentality: lifting boards without damage (to the boards or surroundings: skirting boards, hearths, door frames etc), taking care around cables and pipes, using multitools and mini circular saws etc carefully and precisely, working out how to access difficult corners.
The work is project-based: one or two jobs a week, each taking 1-3 days typically (larger jobs might be up to 5 days) and working the hours required to complete the project – e.g. two days at 10-12 hours per day to get the job done.
This role WILL NOT suit anyone looking for a steady 9-to-5, five days per week. It WILL suit someone looking for 1-3 days' work most but not all weeks (often starting on a Monday, but not always) within a friendly, civilised team. It WILL suit the self-employed: handymen; artisans looking to earn decent money part-time in tandem with their craft work; hands-on problem-solvers who work on a project basis in their industry but have gaps to fill. If you are good in front of customers and enjoy chatting to them, that is ideal.
Pay is by the hour, with no time knocked off for lunch breaks etc: i.e. if you work 08:00-18:00 you'll get paid the full 10 hours.
Initial trial day is at £20/hour. Pay can be increased based on experience and reliability.
Key requirements
- We work in the homes of highly professional people, including the elderly or those with young kids. Therefore it is non-negotiable that you are polite, considerate and thoughtful: lovely for our customers to have in their home! Zero swearing or rough behaviour allowed.
- You will need to be able to pass an enhanced DBS check
- POSITIVITY is crucial, please. We only employ people who are optimistic and not cynical; who appreciate other people rather than being rude or dismissive about them. You will need to be open-minded to the work and your team; with a problem-solving, can-do attitude and an enjoyment of helping out.
- RELIABILITY is the final non-negotiable. If you say you'll be there, then be there. We rely on each other to get the job done safely and within the expectations/schedule offered to the customer.
- NVQ2/3 Underfloor Insulation is a bonus
- Ultimately, the professionalism, integrity and helpfulness of our team is our main business proposition to our customers. Although we're installing floor insulation, the customer can't see it and, unless it happens to be during a cold spell, they won't necessarily feel the effect straight away. Therefore is is vital that they like us, trust us and enjoy their entire Warmdwell experience. If you can contribute to this, we will hugely value having you on the team and offer you every opportunity to take more responsibility, learn new skills and become a core part of our fast-growing business.
Qualifications
The only mandatory requirements are for good, reliable people who do good, absolutely honest work. But there are a few practical details to note:
- We are a completely above-board company. We pay into your bank account, on the last day of each job or at the end of the week (whichever is sooner)
- We pay through the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), which means your tax is taken off your paycheck for you to reclaim at the end of the tax year. If you are not registered with CIS, this is deducted at 30%; if you are registered, 20% is deducted. In either case, you can claim back what is owed to you through your self-assessment tax return
- You will be employed on an ad-hoc self-employed basis
- Have your own insurance. It is inexpensive if you need to get it
- No requirement to have your own transport
- Trade or hands-on making experience is important: the confidence to use power tools such as multitools, mini circular saws and SDS drills, and to enjoy using the tools and materials to hand to solve any problems discovered during the work
- Any plumbing or electrical qualifications are a bonus.
Building our team and supporting your individual goals is a fundamental part of Warmdwell. We offer flexible work to works for you as well as us; to provide the skills and opportunities you would like; and to help you achieve your personal goals.
