Commercial Solar Project Manager
Spirit Solar Ltd — Reading £17–£22 per hour depending on experience + commission Full-time, Permanent
About us
Spirit Solar Ltd is a renewable energy company based in Reading. We design and install on-grid and off-grid solar PV, battery storage and EV charging on residential and commercial buildings, and we've completed thousands of installations since we started out.
Our commercial arm is growing quickly, delivering larger rooftop and ground-mounted arrays and substantial battery storage systems across a wide range of sites — from service stations and care homes to warehouses, offices and landmark commercial buildings. These are high-value, technically demanding projects with real impact on our clients' energy costs and carbon footprint.
We offer a fast-paced, collaborative and genuinely enjoyable working environment, with an ambitious team that takes pride in delivering work to a high standard.
The role
We have a vacancy for an experienced, capable Project Manager to take ownership of our commercial solar PV and battery storage projects from design through to handover. This is not a trainee position — we're looking for someone who has managed projects before and can hit the ground running, though we'll teach you everything you need to know about solar specifically.
You'll be the person keeping commercial jobs on programme, on budget, and to spec — coordinating everyone from the design team to the client's facilities manager, and making sure every system we hand over is safe, compliant and performing.
What you'll be responsible for
- System design oversight — commercial panel layouts, electrical design, and mounting/ballasted roof systems, working with PVSOL, SketchUp and CAD (hands-on or reviewing depending on your background).
- Grid and compliance — managing DNO applications (G99 / grid connection agreements), metering arrangements, and half-hourly supply considerations for larger sites.
- Project planning and programme management — building and holding the programme, managing budgets and margin, and keeping multiple commercial jobs moving at once.
- Stakeholder liaison — commercial clients, facilities and site managers, installers, scaffolders, roofers, M&E and sub-contractors, and DNOs.
- Health & safety — CDM 2015 responsibilities, RAMS, site risk assessments and safe systems of work on commercial sites.
- Handover and compliance — preparation of handover packs, commissioning, inspection, testing and the full compliance/O&M documentation to commercial standards.
What we're looking for
- Proven project management experience — ideally in construction, M&E, renewables, solar, or a related technical/site-based field.
- A degree (2.1 or above) with a scientific, engineering or mathematical bias is a strong plus, but relevant hands-on project experience matters more here.
- Strong numeracy and a high level of attention to detail.
- The ability to write clearly and concisely — handover packs, client updates and compliance paperwork all need to be right.
- Presentable and articulate, with a confident, cheerful manner on the phone, on site and in front of commercial clients.
- Hard-working and efficient, with the ability to grasp and manage technical detail.
- A full driving licence — the role involves visiting commercial sites and clients.
- Ideally, a genuine desire to help build a more sustainable world.
What you'll get
- £17–£22 per hour depending on experience, plus commission tied to project delivery.
- A fast-growing commercial pipeline and real ownership of your projects.
- Casual dress
- Employee discount
- Flexitime
- Free on-site parking
- Work from home (where the role allows)
- Management progression and career growth
