Job Overview
Mesothelioma UK is seeking a compassionate and motivated Benefits Officer (part time, 15 hours per week, fixed term contract for 2 years) to join our team, providing specialist welfare benefits advice and casework support to people affected by mesothelioma across the North East of England.
This is a part‑time, home‑based role, ideal for someone with experience in welfare benefits advice who is looking for flexibility while making a real difference to the lives of people facing serious illness.
Duties
- Provide welfare benefits advice and casework support by phone and email to people diagnosed with mesothelioma and their families.
- Attend local events, meetings, and support groups across the North East to offer face‑to‑face advice when needed.
- Liaise with external agencies, advocate on behalf of clients, and signpost to other sources of support.
- Maintain accurate case records and contribute to service monitoring and reporting.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to support Mesothelioma UK’s national benefits service.
Requirements
- Experience of providing welfare benefits advice and/or managing benefits-related casework, with a good working knowledge of the UK welfare benefits system.
- Experience of supporting people in vulnerable or distressing circumstances with sensitivity, empathy and professionalism.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise work, manage a caseload and maintain accurate client records.
- Good IT skills, including confidence using case management systems, databases, email and Microsoft Office.
- The ability to work independently and use your initiative while also contributing positively as part of a wider team.
- The ability to build effective working relationships with external agencies and local support services.
- A flexible, adaptable and reliable approach, with a strong commitment to confidentiality.
You must be based in the North East of England and willing to attend events, meetings and local support groups across the region.
A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential.
Experience of working within a charity, health or advice sector would be an advantage, as would knowledge of benefits relevant to people with serious or life-limiting illness.
Experience of delivering presentations or training to groups or professionals would also be welcomed.
