The Role
Reporting directly to the Night Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day management of the night operation, ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant running of the transport function. You will help lead the night team, support drivers and operational staff, and ensure customer expectations are consistently exceeded.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with transport or logistics experience who is looking to progress into a management role.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Night Manager in the planning, organisation and control of the depot's nightly transport operation.
- Assist with the effective management of vehicle and driver resources to maximise operational efficiency and service performance.
- Monitor transport operations to ensure customer requirements and KPI targets are consistently achieved.
- Support the management of the traffic desk and resolve operational issues in a calm and professional manner.
- Produce accurate operational reports and performance data for management and customers.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant transport legislation, company policies and operating procedures.
- Promote and maintain compliance with FORS, Health & Safety, Driver Hours, Working Time Directive and Operator Licence requirements.
- Support fleet compliance through effective monitoring, auditing and liaison with the Depot Manager and workshop providers.
- Maintain effective communication with drivers, warehouse staff and management throughout the shift.
- Carry out effective shift handovers to ensure operational continuity.
- Lead by example, promoting professionalism, teamwork and excellent customer service.
- Deputise for the Night Manager during periods of annual leave or absence.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties required to support the business.
People Management
- Support the recruitment, induction and development of new employees.
- Coach and mentor drivers and operational staff to achieve high performance standards.
- Assist with performance management, training and development planning.
- Help manage attendance, annual leave and absence records.
- Assist in investigating operational issues and employee concerns where required.
- Foster a positive, motivated and engaged team culture.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous experience within a transport, logistics or distribution environment.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities.
- The ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of transport legislation, Driver Hours and Working Time Regulations (desirable).
- Understanding of FORS, compliance and health & safety standards (desirable).
- A proactive attitude with a commitment to continuous improvement and excellent customer service.
