Salary - Up to £51,000 dependent upon experience

What you need to know about the role
We’re looking for a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join the Blast Furnace Engineering Department, working within the Ancillaries section.
In this role, you’ll be the engineering lead for ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the gas plant and pumphouses. You’ll work hands‑on with mechanical equipment including pumps and associated pipework, gas pipework and valves, gas cleaning systems, pressure systems and hydraulic systems to ensure cooling and cleaning to the furnaces and gas quality across site.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading mechanical maintenance activities, fault‑finding and breakdown response for the Ancillaries gas plant areas.
- Using modern diagnostic technology to assess plant condition and plan proactive maintenance.
- Developing engineering solutions and improvement projects that enhance reliability, safety and performance.
- Supporting operational teams to meet safety, environmental and production targets.
- Managing maintenance work scopes, technical documentation and contractor activity.
This is a technically challenging, fast‑paced role where your decisions directly impact furnace performance and asset integrity. It’s a great opportunity for someone who enjoys owning a specialist asset and becoming the go‑to engineer in a crucial area of the business.
What we need to know about you
You’ll bring strong mechanical engineering knowledge and the confidence to apply it in a heavy industrial environment. Ideally, you’ll have experience in:
- Mechanical maintenance in complex process industries (steelmaking, power generation, chemical, oil/gas, etc.)
- Pressure systems, combustion equipment or high‑temperature operations
- Root cause analysis, reliability improvement and planned maintenance
You’ll need excellent organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with production, engineering and contractor teams. Ideally you should be qualified to degree level in Mechanical Engineering or a HNC with 5 years heavy industry experience.
