Job summary
The Storeperson / Sample Collection Driver is responsible for managing inventory, tools, and equipment for our geotechnical engineering projects, and for driving to sites across the UK to collect and deliver soil and rock samples, materials, and equipment. This is a hands-on, dual role that combines yard-based stores work with a significant amount of driving, so the ideal candidate will be a confident, reliable driver as well as an organised storeperson with an eye for detail.
Alongside the traditional stores duties of receiving, storing, and distributing materials and keeping the yard safe and well organised, the postholder will spend a substantial part of the working week on the road — collecting samples from active and remote site locations, transporting them safely back to the laboratory or yard, and delivering equipment and supplies out to field teams. Flexibility is important, as collection routes and site requirements vary from day to day and some journeys may involve early starts, long distances, or occasional overnight stays.
Key responsibilitiesDriving & sample collection
- Drive company vehicles to sites across the UK to collect geotechnical samples (soil, rock, groundwater, and similar) and return them safely to the laboratory or yard.
- Plan and follow efficient collection and delivery routes, allowing for distance, traffic, and site access arrangements.
- Handle, label, and secure samples correctly during transit to preserve their integrity and maintain the chain of custody / sample documentation.
- Deliver tools, equipment, and materials out to site engineers and field teams around the country, and collect items for return.
- Load and unload the vehicle safely, ensuring loads are secured and within legal weight limits.
- Carry out daily vehicle checks, keep the vehicle clean and roadworthy, and report any defects, servicing needs, or incidents promptly.
- Undertake occasional early starts, long-distance journeys, or overnight stays as required by the collection schedule.
Inventory management
- Receive, inspect, and store geotechnical equipment, tools, and materials.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and conduct regular stock checks.
- Ensure proper labelling and storage of items to prevent damage or loss.
- Track usage and reordering levels for frequently used materials.
Material handling & distribution
- Prepare and issue materials and tools for site engineers and field teams.
- Ensure timely dispatch and delivery of supplies to various job sites.
- Check incoming and outgoing deliveries for discrepancies and report any issues.
Yard organisation & maintenance
- Keep the storage area clean, safe, and organised.
- Follow safety protocols when handling heavy equipment and hazardous materials.
- Conduct routine checks on tools and equipment, arranging for repairs or replacements as needed.
Documentation & reporting
- Maintain accurate records of stock levels, deliveries, sample collections, and issued materials.
- Generate inventory reports and update the internal system with stock and sample movements.
- Complete mileage, vehicle, and delivery paperwork accurately.
- Assist in audits and compliance checks related to inventory and storage practices.
Health & safety compliance
- Follow company and industry safety guidelines for driving, material handling, and storage.
- Comply with all road traffic law, driver-hours good practice, and safe-loading requirements.
- Ensure that all equipment and tools are stored properly and in safe working condition.
- Report any hazards, vehicle defects, or safety concerns to management.
Skills & qualifications
- Full, valid UK driving licence with a clean or near-clean record (essential); confidence driving long distances and to varied, sometimes remote, site locations.
- Previous experience as a storeperson, driver, or in a similar warehouse/logistics role.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to operate forklifts or other warehouse machinery (certification preferred).
- Basic computer skills for inventory tracking and reporting.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently on the road and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and capable of lifting heavy materials and samples when required.
- Flexibility to accommodate varying routes, early starts, and occasional overnight stays.
