Welcome and thank you for your interest in learning more about City of York Council and our permanent Assistant Director of Culture, Growth and Infrastructure role.
This is a new, pivotal and exciting opportunity for an inspiring leader to help shape York's future prosperity and deliver lasting benefits for our residents, businesses and communities.
We are passionate about York, a progressive, inclusive and sustainable city that places the wellbeing of its residents at the heart of everything it does, whilst protecting the heritage, character and culture of this world-famous city with UNESCO status.
The city is entering an exciting period of transformation. The Council is lead
ing the development of the new Local Plan (York 2045), working closely with the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, developers and partners to unlock significant opportunities for growth. This includes the delivery of York Central, one of the largest brownfield regeneration sites in England, the development of more affordable housing, and investment in sustainable transport and infrastructure. Alongside this, we are committed to becoming a net-zero city by 2030, with major renewable energy projects and strategic business cases already underway.
About the role
As Assistant Director of Culture, Growth and Infrastructure, you will lead the City Development workforce and play a pivotal role in shaping the city's future through strategic leadership of planning, economic growth, regeneration, culture, infrastructure and investment.
Working with cultural and heritage partners, funders, investors and key organisations to secure investment, develop strategic partnerships and unlock opportunities that strengthen York’s cultural and heritage offer and enhance the city’s national and international reputation.
Beyond York, you will represent the city at regional and national level, working with York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, City and Regional partners, government departments, professional networks, businesses and sector leaders. You will have the opportunity to influence policy, contribute to regional growth and investment priorities, support sector-led improvement, and help shape the future of public services and place leadership.
This combination of local impact, regional influence and national engagement offers an exceptional platform for professional growth and career development whilst making a lasting difference to the future prosperity and success of York.
You will find a role that offers both professional challenge and genuine influence. York is large enough to provide the complexity, scale and ambition that make local government leadership rewarding, yet small enough to enable you to make decisions, build relationships and see the impact of your work. This high-profile role offers an outstanding opportunity to make a significant difference while further developing your career.
