Reports to: Head of Estate and Grounds Team
Overview:
Chilham Castle is a prestigious 16th-century estate renowned for its high-end formal gardens and expansive grounds. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced gardener to join our team. This is an exceptional opportunity for a skilled professional to contribute to the ongoing care and enhancement of one of England’s most iconic properties.
This position is initially offered on a fixed-term basis for two months. Following a successful review at the end of this period, there may be an opportunity for the role to become permanent.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Garden and Grounds Maintenance:
- Maintain high-end formal gardens to an exceptional standard.
- Perform all aspects of gardening, including planting, pruning, lawn care, and pest management.
- Undertake seasonal tasks such as hedge trimming, mulching, and topiary maintenance.
2. Machinery and Equipment Operation:
- Operate and maintain a variety of garden machinery, including mowers, trimmers, and chainsaws.
- Drive tractors and other heavy equipment as required.
3. Health and Safety Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to COSHH regulations and implement risk assessments for all tasks.
- Promote a safe working environment for the team and visitors.
4. Additional Skills and Certifications (Desirable):
- Hold PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates or have a willingness to train.
- Chainsaw certification for tree and hedge maintenance tasks.
Key Attributes and Qualifications:
- Extensive hands-on experience in high-end formal garden maintenance.
- Strong practical knowledge of plants, horticultural techniques, and landscaping.
- Proficiency in operating a wide range of garden machinery.
- Solid understanding of COSHH and risk assessment implementation.
- Excellent team management and interpersonal skills.
- PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates and a chainsaw license are advantageous but not essential.
