The Rothen Group is looking for an experienced Groundworker / Plant Operative to join our contracting team, working on a variety of projects across the UK’s inland waterways.
This is a hands-on role combining groundworks with the operation of construction plant and machinery. We are looking for someone who is confident operating machinery when required but is equally willing to get out of the machine and work on the tools alongside the rest of the site team.
Our projects take place on canals, rivers and other waterside locations and involve a wide range of civil engineering, construction and maintenance activities.
Due to the nature of our projects, the role involves travelling to different sites across the UK and working away from home will be required at times.
Responsibilities
Working as part of our contracting team, your duties will include:
- Carrying out general groundworks and civil engineering activities
- Excavating and preparing ground for construction works
- Operating tracked 360 excavators and other construction plant where experienced and required
- Operating dumpers, rollers and other site machinery where experienced and appropriately qualified
- Working on the tools alongside the wider site team when not operating plant
- Moving and handling materials and equipment
- Assisting with waterside and marine construction activities
- Carrying out daily checks on plant and equipment and reporting any defects
- Working from instructions, site drawings and levels where required
- Assisting Site Supervisors to complete works safely, efficiently and to the required standard
- Following site health and safety procedures, RAMS and safe systems of work
- Using company technology to communicate with the office regarding jobs and daily activities
- Representing The Rothen Group professionally when dealing with clients, members of the public, visitors to the waterways and volunteer groups
- Supporting other members of the site team as required
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone with proven groundworks experience who is comfortable carrying out a variety of practical construction tasks.
You should have experience in areas such as:
- Excavation and ground preparation
- General civil engineering and groundworks
- Using hand and power tools
- Operating tracked 360 excavators
- Operating other construction plant and machinery
Experience working within marine civils, waterways, river works, utilities or similar environments would be advantageous but is not essential.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a flexible and hands-on approach. This is not a machine-driver-only position. You must be willing to operate plant when required and work on the tools alongside the rest of the team when the machine is not required.
You will need to be practical, reliable, able to work as part of a team and have a positive can-do attitude.
Essential
- Valid CSCS Card
- Previous groundworks/civil engineering experience
- Previous experience operating tracked 360 excavators
- Full valid UK driving licence
- Good understanding of construction site health and safety
- Confident using hand and power tools
- Willingness to carry out both plant operation and hands-on groundworks
- Willingness to travel to sites throughout the UK
- Willingness to work away from home when required
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Based within Warwickshire or the surrounding area

- Current or previously held NPORS/CPCS 360 Excavator qualification
- Tracked Dumper

- Slinger/Signaller or Banksman
- CAT & Genny
- First Aid
- Fire Marshal
- B+E driving licence entitlement
- RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman
- Experience working around canals, rivers or other waterways
- Marine civils experience
- Utilities experience
Candidates with good 360 excavator experience but an expired or previously held plant qualification are encouraged to apply. Additional training and qualifications may be provided to the right person.
Hours & Pay
Full-time position. Standard working hours are 7:00am–5:00pm, with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.
This is an hourly paid position, with the rate dependent on experience, qualifications and plant tickets and discussed during the interview process.
Overtime may be available, including weekend working.
Due to the nature and location of our projects, working away from home and overnight stays will be required at times.
