The Opportunity
An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an accomplished and passionate Head Chef to take ownership of the culinary operation at Maxwell.
This position is ideally suited to a highly organised and self-motivated chef who thrives in an independent role, taking complete responsibility for the day-to-day management of the kitchen while consistently delivering outstanding food and service.
As the sole chef, you will possess the confidence, creativity and professionalism to oversee every aspect of the kitchen operation—from menu planning and food preparation to stock control, compliance and service delivery. This role requires someone who takes genuine pride in their craft and understands the importance of creating an exceptional dining experience within a refined hospitality setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the culinary operation with complete ownership of the kitchen, ensuring consistently high standards of food quality and presentation.
- Design and deliver seasonal menus inspired by the finest locally sourced Kentish ingredients, balancing timeless classics with modern culinary innovation.
- Prepare and present every dish with precision, consistency and attention to detail.
- Manage all aspects of food production, stock control, ordering, waste management and supplier relationships to ensure an efficient and cost-effective operation.
- Maintain exemplary standards of food hygiene, health and safety, ensuring full compliance with all relevant legislation and best practice.
- Monitor kitchen performance, maintaining exceptional standards of cleanliness, organisation and operational excellence.
- Work collaboratively with the front-of-house team to provide a seamless and memorable dining experience for residents, guests and visitors.
- Contribute fresh ideas to support seasonal promotions, special events and the continued development of Maxwell's culinary offering.
- Act as an ambassador for Maxwell, upholding the restaurant's reputation for quality, professionalism and genuine hospitality.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Proven experience as a Head Chef or Senior Sous Chef within a quality restaurant, hotel or hospitality environment.
- The ability to confidently manage a kitchen independently without the need for direct kitchen supervision.
- Exceptional culinary skills with a genuine passion for seasonal British cuisine and locally sourced produce.
- Strong commercial awareness, with experience in food costing, stock management and kitchen budgeting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of food safety legislation, HACCP procedures and environmental health standards.
- Outstanding organisational and time management skills, with the ability to remain calm and composed during busy service periods.
- Creativity, initiative and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships across departments.
- A meticulous eye for detail and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
Working Pattern
This position requires flexibility to meet the operational needs of the business.
The successful candidate will be expected to work a varied rota, including weekdays, evenings and weekends, in line with the restaurant's opening hours and business demands. Flexibility is essential to ensure the continued delivery of exceptional service.
