About Us
The Agricultural Inn is an award-winning country pub and restaurant just outside Exeter.
We’re an independent, family-run business with a strong focus on quality food, local produce and friendly, relaxed hospitality.
Our kitchen cooks everything fresh wherever possible, using great ingredients from local and regional suppliers. Our menus combine pub favourites with more creative seasonal dishes, specials and regular events including our themed five-course Supper Clubs.
We’re now looking for an experienced Sous Chef to join our kitchen team and work closely alongside our Head Chef.
The Role
This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys being part of a busy kitchen and takes pride in producing consistently great food.
As Sous Chef, you’ll support the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen and help lead the team during service.
You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute ideas to menus, specials and events.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting the Head Chef with the daily running of the kitchen
- Leading kitchen service in the Head Chef's absence
- Preparing and cooking dishes to a consistently high standard
- Supervising and supporting chefs and kitchen assistants
- Helping organise sections and ensuring smooth service
- Maintaining consistency, presentation and portion control
- Assisting with menu development and seasonal specials
- Contributing ideas for new dishes and events
- Monitoring stock levels and helping with ordering
- Reducing food waste and helping control kitchen costs
- Ensuring correct food storage, labelling and stock rotation
- Maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness and organisation
- Ensuring food hygiene, allergen and health & safety procedures are followed
- Helping train and develop junior members of the kitchen team
- Working closely with the front-of-house team to provide a great guest experience
About You
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience as a Sous Chef or an experienced Chef de Partie ready to progress
- Is confident working in a busy fresh-food kitchen
- Has a genuine passion for cooking and quality ingredients
- Takes pride in presentation and consistency
- Is organised and calm during busy services
- Is reliable and works well as part of a team
- Can confidently lead a kitchen when required
- Understands food hygiene, allergens and kitchen safety
- Is willing to contribute ideas rather than simply follow a set menu
- Has a positive attitude and wants to be part of a long-term team
What We Offer
- Competitive salary depending on experience
- Approximately 45 hours per week
- Live-in accommodation available
- Great tips shared fairly through TRONC
- Staff food while working
- Regular team events
- Opportunities to contribute to menus and specials
- Opportunities to develop and progress within the business
- A supportive, independent family-run environment
- The chance to work with quality local and seasonal produce
- A varied role covering restaurant service, events, specials and our Supper Club evenings
Why Join The Agi?
We care about the food we serve and the people who work with us.
We’re not a large chain with menus decided elsewhere. Our chefs have the opportunity to be creative, suggest dishes and genuinely influence what comes out of the kitchen.
If you’re a hardworking chef who loves fresh food, enjoys being part of a close-knit team and wants a role where you can have some creative input, we’d love to hear from you.
To apply, please send us your CV along with a brief introduction telling us a little about yourself and your experience.
