About the role
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Drainage Design Engineer to join our Major Projects team based out of our offices at Canary Wharf.
Role purpose:
- To lead the technical delivery, strategy, and team management for complex water and civil infrastructure projects;
- To help manage the technical function of the business, ensuring that we provide our customers with the best and safest solutions and by providing the best innovative technical support/advice available in the market;
- Plan, manage, prioritise and report to the Technical Director on the design workload in the office in which they work;
- To assist the Technical Director to achieve best technical governance of our activities;
- To assist the Technical Director to develop technical excellence in their field of expertise.
What you'll be doing
As a Senior Drainage Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the following:
- Responsible for designing all aspects of drainage for highways, rail, and urban development projects.
- Preparation of DMRB design reports and technical specifications for stormwater drainage and related works
- Day-to-day project management, including the delivery of concept studies, detailed designs, and construction drawings
- Ensuring projects are delivered on budget, on schedule, and to technical standards, while meeting QA, CDM, sustainability, and HSE requirements
- Direct line management responsibilities, including mentoring and managing early-career professionals, ensuring technical excellence in all deliverables.
- Supporting the Technical Director and Pre-Construction Managers to provide input to the overall design strategy and workload management.
- Supporting the delivery teams, verifying the work of others in a timely and efficient manner, and providing expert technical support.
- Ensuring design risks are considered and prepare design risk assessments. Communicate residual design risks to others.
- Providing strong technical support to tenders and support the work winning team in identifying innovative and robust solutions.
- Maintaining a positive working environment within the team.
- Developing and maintain relationships with relevant technical consultants and suppliers.
- Providing technical support and attend work winning interviews with current or potential customers.
- Promoting the development of BIM within the design process.
- Supporting the Technical Director and Design Manager, in ensuring that learning and best practice is shared across the business stream and the business as a whole.
- Maintaining personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that technical expertise is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards.
- Exercise designer obligations of the Construction (Design and Management) regulations.
Who we're looking for
Personal qualities and experience:
Preferable to have a recognised profession qualification (CEng - MICE/MIStructE).
You must have a strong academic background in Engineering (drainage) and
experience working within a UK standard, completing flood risk assessments, surface water drainage strategies and detailed drainage designs using InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage or Causeway Flow.
In addition, you will have:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the relevant field.
A strong understanding of hydraulic and hydrological principles
The ability to analyse technical design problems and propose innovative solutions to improve outcomes and processes.
A good working knowledge and experience on using AutoCAD-2D and Civil 3D.
This is a key role requiring extensive up to date technical knowledge of drainage. You will be both focussed on the gravitas and professional credibility to be able to advise senior management when something needs immediate redress together with the tenacity and drive to ensure that the necessary action is taken. You will, therefore, be a subject matter expert with a good understanding in other areas in the drainage field.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners and delivery team members under time pressure. Customer centric and flexible in approach, you will have the strategic and creative insight to understand the range of opportunities in invitations to tender and be willing to challenge the norm. You will know ‘what good looks like’ in bid submissions and work winning and have hands on experience of leading technical aspects of work-winning bids in a timely manner.
You should have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on the customer and the Major Projects business.
