Sterling Plastering Group is seeking an experienced and commercially minded Finance Manager to take full ownership of the company’s finance function.
This is a senior, hands-on position reporting directly to the Managing Director. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining strong financial controls, managing cash flow and funding requirements, producing accurate management information and overseeing the company’s day-to-day finance operations.
The role would suit an experienced Finance Manager who is comfortable working in a fast-moving construction environment and combining strategic financial oversight with practical involvement in transactional finance.
Key responsibilities
- Take full ownership of the company’s finance function
- Prepare and maintain detailed short- and medium-term cash-flow forecasts, including a rolling 13-week forecast
- Manage banking relationships, funding requirements and the company’s finance facility
- Produce timely monthly management accounts, budgets and financial forecasts
- Provide clear financial and commercial reporting to the Managing Director
- Monitor contract profitability, overhead recovery, margins and business performance
- Oversee purchase ledger, sales ledger, credit control, supplier payments and bank reconciliations
- Manage payroll and ensure accurate and timely processing
- Oversee VAT, CIS, PAYE and other HMRC reporting and payment obligations
- Reconcile applications for payment, payment certificates, retentions and outstanding client balances
- Improve financial processes, reporting systems and internal controls
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks, funders and professional advisers
- Support senior management with commercial and financial decision-making
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial information held within Xero
Experience and attributes
- Proven experience in a Finance Manager or similar senior finance position
- Strong cash-flow management, forecasting and management-accounting experience
- Advanced working knowledge of Xero
- Confident managing payroll and transactional finance
- Experience managing banking or invoice-finance facilities
- Strong Excel and financial-modelling skills
- Commercially aware, organised and confident working to strict deadlines
- Able to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
- Comfortable operating both strategically and at a detailed, hands-on level
- High degree of integrity, discretion and personal accountability
Experience within construction, subcontracting or a similarly cash-flow-sensitive industry is highly desirable. Knowledge of CIS, retentions, applications for payment and construction contract accounting would be a significant advantage.
Qualifications
Candidates may be qualified, part-qualified or qualified by experience. Relevant qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA or ACA would be advantageous, but practical experience, commercial awareness and the ability to take ownership of the complete finance function are equally important.
What we offer
- Salary of £50,000–£60,000, dependent upon experience
- Permanent, senior position within an established construction business
- Direct involvement in financial and strategic decision-making
- Opportunity to improve and develop the company’s finance systems and controls
- Fully office-based role at our Knowsley office
