College Campus Security Officer
Location: Crewe, Cheshire
Reports to: Contract Manager / Site Supervisor
Job Purpose
As a College Campus Security Officer, you will play a vital role in creating and maintaining a safe, secure and welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.
This is much more than a traditional security role. You will be a visible, approachable presence across the campus, helping to deter crime and anti-social behaviour while building positive relationships within the college community. Working closely with college staff, you will support safeguarding, promote wellbeing, and contribute to an inclusive culture where everyone feels safe, respected and supported.
Key Responsibilities
- Campus Presence & Student Engagement
- Provide a highly visible and professional security presence through regular patrols of buildings, entrances, social areas, car parks and campus perimeters.
- Build positive relationships with students, staff and visitors by remaining approachable, courteous and supportive at all times.
- Balance vigilance with excellent customer service, ensuring the campus remains both secure and welcoming.
- Offer guidance, directions and assistance to students, staff and visitors where required.
- Identify potential security, welfare or behavioural concerns and take proactive action to prevent escalation.
Incident Management & Reporting
- Respond promptly, professionally and appropriately to security incidents, emergencies and welfare concerns.
- Accurately record incidents, observations and actions using the company's digital reporting systems.
- Communicate effectively with the Control Room, college representatives and emergency services where necessary.
- Resolve conflict using effective communication and de-escalation techniques.
- Report safeguarding concerns in accordance with both company and college procedures.
Security, Safety & Compliance
- Monitor access control points to ensure only authorised persons gain entry to restricted areas.
- Carry out routine security inspections of doors, gates, buildings, alarms and perimeter security.
- Identify and report hazards, maintenance issues or environmental concerns including defective lighting, damaged property or blocked fire exits.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of college policies, safeguarding procedures, health and safety requirements and emergency arrangements.
- Assist during emergency incidents, evacuations and fire drills as required.
Partnership Working
- Work collaboratively with college staff, facilities management, emergency services and partner agencies to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Share relevant information and intelligence that may assist in preventing incidents or improving campus safety.
- Support college events, enrolment periods, open evenings and other activities where a security presence is required.
- Promote a culture of respect, responsibility and inclusion throughout the college community.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Valid SIA Door Supervisor Licence.
- Enhanced DBS Check (or willingness to obtain one prior to employment).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm, professional and confident under pressure.
- Strong conflict management and de-escalation skills.
- Experience or confidence in carrying out physical intervention where necessary and in accordance with training.
- Competent in using radios, body-worn cameras and digital reporting systems.
- Ability to travel reliably to Crewe College.
- Smart, professional appearance and commitment to wearing company uniform.
- Flexible approach to working hours to support operational requirements.
Desirable
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Previous experience within education, campus or community security.
- Knowledge of safeguarding legislation and the Prevent Duty.
- Understanding of issues affecting young adults within educational settings.
Hours of Work
- 60hours per week.
- College term-time only
- Base working hours of Monday-Friday 08:00-18:00 plus extended hours.
- Flexibility to work additional hours during college events, enrolment periods and where operational requirements require.
