Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Yard Operative to oversee the day-to-day operations of our busy builders' merchant yard. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising yard staff, ensuring excellent customer service, maintaining health and safety standards, and coordinating the efficient receipt, storage, and dispatch of building materials.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and lead the yard team, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
- Manage the loading and unloading of customer and supplier vehicles.
- Ensure stock is accurately received, checked, stored, and replenished.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe yard environment at all times.
- Support customers by providing prompt, professional, and helpful service.
- Coordinate vehicle loading schedules to ensure timely deliveries.
- Conduct regular stock checks and assist with inventory control procedures.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, health and safety regulations, and industry standards.
- Train, coach, and develop yard operatives to maximise performance and productivity.
- Report equipment defects, maintenance requirements, and operational issues to management.
- Assist with forklift operations and other material handling activities where required.
- Work closely with the sales office, transport team, and branch management to ensure smooth branch operations.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience within a builders' merchant, construction materials supplier, or similar environment.
- Proven supervisory or team leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of building materials and yard operations.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Forklift Truck (FLT) licence or willingness to obtain one.
Desirable
- Experience using stock control or warehouse management systems.
- Knowledge of transport and delivery scheduling.
- First Aid or Health & Safety qualifications.

Working Hours
Monday - Friday 7.30am-5pm
