1. ROLE OVERVIEW
MarinePro’s Principal is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer to undertake the installation, commissioning, servicing, and troubleshooting , gas transfer and linked emergency shutdown link systems used in LNG, LPG, and other liquefied gas transfer and alternative fuelling operations. These systems manage the critical safety interface between vessel and terminal during cargo transfer, mutually shutting down ship and shore pumping systems in the event of an abnormal condition or emergency.
The role is engaged on a self-employed subcontractor basis for a defined period as part of the principal’s team, , and is not a permanent or directly employed position. The successful contractor will work independently, using their own tools and methods, at the Pricipal’s premises, travelling to vessel and terminal sites as required.
2. BACKGROUND: THE TECHNOLOGY
Linked ship shore ESD systems provide high integrity, fail-safe signalling between ship and shore or ship and ship during gas transfer operations. Communication is via proprietary analogue and digital signalling over fibre optic, electric, and pneumatic media with a range of connector types, several of which have been in service since the 1970s.
There are a number of leading suppliers of systems to this application space, including MarinePro’s Principal . Engineers working in this field will be comfortable supporting both legacy hardware and current digital/fibre systems side by side, often on the same assignment.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Install and/or commission SSL, USL, and ESL systems aboard vessels and at shore terminals,
- Carry out routine servicing, calibration, and fault diagnosis of ESD signalling (fibre optic, electric, pneumatic),
- Have competency with upgrading system software and firmware with laptop on sire or on board,
- Work with a mix of legacy and current connector types and link technologies,
- Configure process signals to interface with linked ESD systems with vessel and terminal control systems
- Be familiar with the requirements of and precautions required when working within Hazardous Areas, Zone 2 and 1
- Produce clear, accurate service reports and communicate findings to clients and the Principal ‘s & MarinePro’s technical office,
- Be familiar with travelling alone, logistics, and scheduling around agreed assignment deliverables
- Liaise professionally with ship's crew, terminal operations staff, and other contractors on site or on board,
4. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
ESSENTIAL
- Proven background in electrical/electronic systems, ideally in marine applications,
- Fibre optic installation and testing experience
- Familiarity with distributed control systems integration and configuration
- Experience of working in Gas Dangerous Hazardous Areas,
- Ability to work independently and manage own schedule on short-notice international assignments, readiness to travel at short notice with valid British or EU Passport
DESIRABLE
- Recognised electrical/electronics qualification (e.g. HNC/HND, City & Guilds, or equivalent),
- Experience with SIL-rated safety systems (IEC 61508 / SIL 2),
- Familiarity with ISO 28460, ISO 20519, and SIGTTO ESD guidelines,
- 5. Engagement BasisThis role is offered on a self-employed subcontractor basis, suited to an established freelance technician or engineer. The contractor will invoice for defined periods of work, using their own tools and methods. Good day rates apply. Candidates should be based in or able to travel readily from the Chester area, Northwest England, or Northeast Wales, given the coordination and travel demands of the role.
Pay: £350.00-£475.00 per day
