About the Role
This is a Hybrid role, but office attendance is very flexible with a bias towards remote.
We are looking for an experienced, post-qualified accountant to lead one of our delivery pods. You will own the output of your pod, manage a small team of accountants and bookkeepers, and be the first point of escalation for technical queries before they reach the Head of Accounting.
This is not a purely technical role. You will be responsible for the quality, timeliness, and consistency of everything your pod produces. You will develop the people in your team and hold them to a high standard.
You will work across a diverse SME client base covering a wide range of sectors, structures, and complexity levels. You need to be comfortable moving between different client situations and handling whatever comes up with confidence.
Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
- Prepare and review annual accounts and corporation tax returns across a varied SME client base
- Prepare and review self-assessment tax returns including more complex personal tax situations
- Review VAT returns and manage VAT-related queries and compliance obligations
- Handle HMRC correspondence, enquiries, and audits on behalf of clients
- Identify tax planning opportunities and flag them appropriately within the client relationship
Client and Technical Escalations
- Be the first escalation point for technical queries from accountants and bookkeepers within your pod
- Handle client queries that require senior input, resolving them independently where possible
- Escalate to the Head of Accounting only where the situation genuinely requires it
- Maintain a high standard of client communication and ensure queries are resolved accurately and promptly
Compliance and Standards
- Ensure all work within your pod meets the firm's technical and compliance standards
- Stay current with HMRC guidance and UK GAAP developments relevant to your client base
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation in ClickUp across all client files.
Management
- Review work produced by the team including accoouns & VAT returns
- After 3-6 months, lead a pod of accountants and bookkeepers, managing workflow, priorities, and deadlines
- Hold your team accountable for quality and flag performance issues early
- Support the development of junior staff through day-to-day guidance and structured feedback
- Contribute to SOP development and ensure your pod follows firm-wide processes consistently
About You
Essential
- ACA or ACCA qualified
- Minimum two years post-qualified experience in UK accountancy practice
- Strong working knowledge of accounts preparation, corporation tax, personal tax, and VAT
- Experience handling HMRC enquiries and audits
- Confident in reviewing the work of junior staff and providing clear, constructive feedback
- Comfortable managing your own workload and the workload of a small team in a remote environment
- Proficient with Xero and/or QuickBooks
Preferred
- Experience working across a diverse SME client base including ecommerce, limited companies, and sole traders
- Experience leading or supervising a team in a remote or hybrid environment
