Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Carpenter / General Building Contractor with specific expertise in Grade II listed buildings and traditional timber sash windows. The ideal candidate will combine strong period carpentry knowledge with a practical, can-do attitude to resolving issues sensitively within a client’s historic/special architectural property. This role requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting and repairing issues within heritage properties, ensuring work is carried out to a high standard while respecting the character and fabric of the building.
Duties
· Repair, restoration and draught-proofing of timber sash and casement windows, including cord replacement, timber splicing, re-glazing and refurbishment using traditional joinery techniques.
· Carpentry and general building work sympathetic to period and listed properties, using appropriate traditional materials and methods.
· General maintenance and building work across listed and heritage properties, working within conservation guidelines and any listed building consent requirements.
· Occasional roof works, basic tiling, and plumbing as required.
· Liaising with the operations team, and where relevant conservation officers, to advise on follow-up works and ongoing maintenance requirements.
· Part sourcing and procurement of appropriate heritage and traditional materials.
· Ability to complete tasks with care for historic fabric, mindful of any further trades following and special architectural structures.
· Provide exceptional customer service by addressing queries relating to maintenance and restoration issues promptly.
· Team working skills and the ability to work individually.
· Document maintenance and restoration activities, including repairs performed, materials/parts used, and time taken for each task.
Qualifications
· Proven hands-on experience working on listed and historic buildings.
· Specialist experience repairing and restoring timber sash windows is essential.
· Strong carpentry and joinery background, with knowledge of traditional building methods and materials.
· Working knowledge of listed building regulations and conservation best practice.
· General building skills across plumbing, basic tiling and roof work would be an advantage.
· Excellent communication skills.
· Must have a UK driving license.
· Strong customer service orientation with the ability to communicate effectively in English.
· A proactive approach to problem-solving with a keen eye for detail.
