About the role
Armco Direct is looking for a dependable and practical Yard Operative to join our close-knit team in Loughborough.
If you enjoy being active, working with your hands and spending your working day outside rather than sitting behind a desk, this could be a good fit for you.
You will work alongside an experienced existing yard operative, helping to receive, store, prepare and dispatch Armco barriers and associated steel products.
This is a varied, hands-on position where your reliability, effort and contribution will be noticed and appreciated.
Important: outdoor working
This role involves a high proportion of outdoor work throughout the year, including during cold, wet and hot weather.
Applicants should be comfortable with this before applying. Suitable PPE appropriate to the yard, the work and changing weather conditions will be supplied.
Main duties
- Pick, check, pack and prepare customer orders
- Load and unload lorries, vans and shipping containers
- Receive, move and store stock safely
- Operate a counterbalance forklift once trained and authorised
- Undertake local deliveries and collections using company vehicles
- Keep the yard clean, safe and well organised
- Follow health and safety procedures
- Work cooperatively with the rest of the yard team
Working hours
Our standard working hours are:
- Monday to Friday: 8:00am–4:00pm
- 30-minute unpaid lunch break
- 37.5 paid hours per week
A longer-hours arrangement is also available by agreement:
- Monday to Thursday: 8:00am–5:00pm
- Friday: 8:00am–4:00pm
- 30-minute unpaid lunch break
- 41.5 paid hours per week
Additional overtime may also be available, although it is not guaranteed.
Pay and forklift training
- £14.00 per hour for applicants without a valid counterbalance forklift licence
- Company-funded counterbalance forklift training will be provided
- The hourly rate will increase to £15.00 after successful completion of the probationary period and passing the forklift qualification
- Applicants who already hold a valid counterbalance forklift licence may start on £15.00 per hour
- Wages are paid monthly
What we are looking for
- Full UK driving licence
- Reliable, punctual and hardworking
- Comfortable undertaking physical outdoor work throughout the year
- Sufficient spoken and written English to understand safety and packing instructions, communicate clearly and complete basic paperwork.
- Latvian or Russian language skills would be helpful when communicating within the team, but are not essential
- Safety-conscious and respectful towards colleagues
- Willing to work as part of a small team
- Previous yard, warehouse or distribution experience would be helpful but is not essential
Holiday and benefits
- 24 days’ paid annual leave plus 8 bank holidays
- Seven annual-leave days must be reserved and taken during the company’s annual two-week Christmas shutdown
- One additional holiday day after every completed two years of service, up to four additional days
- Long-service holiday days may be taken as annual leave or exchanged for additional payment, subject to company arrangements
