About Nelson RFC
Nelson RFC is a thriving rugby club with over 400 members and a proud history at the heart of the local community dating back to 1934.
The club currently fields two senior rugby teams, a thriving Mini & Junior section comprising nine age groups, a Youth team and the Nelson Belles U18 Girls team. Beyond rugby, the clubhouse is a focal point for a wide range of community activities, supporting darts, pool, Young Farmers, football presentations, school proms, private parties and fundraising events throughout the year.
The club operates two rugby pitches, three bars, a kitchen and two function rooms, providing a busy and vibrant environment throughout the rugby season and beyond.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, organised and customer-focused Club Steward to oversee the day-to-day operation of our clubhouse and hospitality facilities.
The Role
The Club Steward will play a vital role in ensuring the successful operation of the clubhouse, bar facilities and events programme. Working closely with the Events and Club Committee, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining high standards of service, maximising revenue opportunities and creating a welcoming environment for members, guests and visitors.
The role requires flexibility and commitment, including regular evening, weekend and match-day working.
Key Responsibilities
Bar Operations
- Open and close the clubhouse and bar facilities as required.
- Manage daily cash handling and cashing-up procedures.
- Oversee cellar management and maintain product quality.
- Manage stock ordering, deliveries and stock control.
- Ensure compliance with all licensing regulations and club procedures.
- Identify opportunities to improve sales and customer experience.
Staff Management
- Recruit and support bar staff.
- Prepare and manage staff rotas.
- Support volunteers assisting with club operations.
- Promote a positive and professional working environment.
Clubhouse Management
- Ensure the clubhouse is clean throughout and presented to a high standard at all times.
- Oversee cleaning standards throughout the facility.
- Report and coordinate maintenance requirements.
- Prepare rooms and facilities for events, meetings and functions.
- Ensure the security of the premises when opening and closing.
Events and Hospitality
- Support the delivery of private functions and external bookings.
- Coordinate match-day hospitality.
- Assist with fundraising and community events.
- Help maximise use of the clubhouse and function facilities throughout the year.
Administration
- Assist in maintaining the club booking diary.
- Produce weekly operational reports for the Club Committee.
- Ensure compliance with licensing, health and safety and safeguarding requirements.
- The club must comply with relevant food hygiene standards.
- Support the effective day-to-day administration of the clubhouse operation.
Person Specification
Essential
- Previous pub, club or hospitality management experience.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Experience within a rugby club, sports club or community organisation environment. - Event management experience.
- Good IT and administrative skills.
- First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- DBS clearance (or willingness to undergo checks).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.
Desirable
- Cellar management experience.
- Cash handling and stock control experience.
- Experience of recruiting and managing staff.
