West Sussex County Council (WSCC) staff 130 Crossing Sites within West Sussex, which is operated by the Transport Provision Team, as part of the Highways, Transport & Planning Department of West Sussex County Council.
As part of our team, you will provide a valuable and reliable service to children and other pedestrians at a designated Crossing Site by assisting them to cross the road safely on their way to and from school.
We're looking for people with great communications skills, excellent perception skills to enable you to safely stop traffic and with the ability to remain calm under pressure. The ideal person will naturally go above and beyond; acknowledging that our communities value a friendly face but also require a professional service too.

The Opportunity
Salary: £12.85 per hour, which equates to £3,996 per annum pro rata
Working Pattern: Part time – 7 hours and 5 minutes per week
Work Location: Your base location is Drayton Depot however, you will be assigned to White Meadows Primary Academy in Littlehampton
Contract: Permanent Term Time Only

What is term time only working? A term time only contract is for our staff who are employed to work only during periods when schools are open. Your pay is calculated on an annual basis and then you are paid over twelve equal monthly instalments.
What you will be doing:
Providing a valuable and reliable service to children and other pedestrians at a designated Crossing Site by assisting them to cross the road safely on their way to and from school.
You will be required to stand for extended periods, holding the ‘lollipop’ pole in all weather conditions, to ensure the safe passage of children and adults to their intended destination. This will entail stopping cars.
About you
Some of the key skills, experience and knowledge required to be successful in the role include:
- Ability to understand and carry out the procedures for safely stopping traffic.
- Good oral communication skills to be able to deal effectively with both children and colleagues, and other adults where necessary.
- Good perception and knowledge of car stopping times, in particular the effect that adverse weather conditions have on these.
- Ability to remain calm when put under pressure by drivers or pedestrians.
- A basic level of literacy and numeracy sufficient to follow detailed written instructions and procedures and record necessary information as part of your role.
- To be familiar with the relevant sections of the Highway Code and its applications.
- Experience of working with children and providing a service to others is desirable
