The Role
As a Trainee Assessor, you will work closely with experienced ATS assessors, gaining practical experience and developing your knowledge of workplace assessment.
The opportunity is designed to allow you to develop your assessor skills while continuing to build on your existing childcare experience.
Your training will include:
- Shadowing experienced assessors during visits to nurseries and learner workplaces.
- Observing how experienced assessors plan, conduct and record assessments.
- Learning how to assess learner evidence against qualification requirements.
- Assessing samples of learner evidence under the guidance and support of an experienced assessor.
- Learning how to make fair, consistent and evidence-based assessment decisions.
- Supporting learners to understand assessment requirements and identify appropriate evidence.
- Providing constructive feedback to learners to support their development and progress.
- Learning how to complete assessment paperwork, learner records and electronic systems accurately.
- Developing an understanding of SQA requirements, assessment standards and quality assurance.
- Working with employers, nursery managers and learners to support successful outcomes.
- Gradually developing your assessment skills and responsibilities as your knowledge, skills and confidence develop.
Professional Development
As part of your development with ATS Childcare, you will be enrolled onto:
L&D9DI – Assess Workplace Competence Using Direct and Indirect Methods
ATS Childcare will fully cover the costs of gaining the assessor award.
You will be fully supported throughout the qualification by experienced assessors and will have the opportunity to apply your learning directly through your assessment activities with ATS Childcare.
This provides an opportunity to gain a recognised assessor qualification while also gaining valuable introductory experience of the role.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a minimum of two years' qualified experience within the Early Years and Childcare sector.
- Is currently working in a senior childcare role or above, such as Senior Practitioner, Room Leader, Deputy Manager.
- Has a strong understanding of high-quality childcare practice.
- Is passionate about supporting people to learn, develop and achieve.
- Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Is organised and has good attention to detail.
- Is confident communicating with learners, nursery managers and colleagues.
- Is comfortable using IT systems and completing electronic paperwork.
- Is willing to learn and develop professionally.
- Can work independently while also being part of a supportive team.
- Has a positive, professional and flexible approach.
- Holds a clean UK driving licence and has access to their own car.
You do not need to already hold an assessor qualification or have previous assessment experience. We are looking for the right person with the childcare experience, attitude and commitment to develop their assessment skills.
What We Offer
- Starting salary of £30,000 per annum, with our salary scale progressing up to £45,000.
- 36-hour working week, inclusive of travel.
- Half-day Friday.
- 34 days' annual leave per year.
- Mileage paid from home, in line with ATS Childcare's mileage policy.

The Ideal Candidate
This opportunity would suit an experienced Senior Practitioner, Room Leader, Deputy Manager who is interested in exploring a new career pathway.
You may already have experience mentoring colleagues, supporting apprentices, coaching staff or helping others develop their practice.
Most importantly, you will have a passion for childcare, a commitment to supporting others and a desire to develop your skills in training and assessment.
If you have at least two years' qualified childcare experience, are currently working in a senior role or above, hold a clean UK driving licence and have access to your own car, and would like the opportunity to gain an assessor qualification and valuable introductory experience, we would love to hear from you.
Pay: Up to £30,000.00 per year
