About the Role
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Fellow to join the Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Institute at the University of Nottingham and become a core member of a team researching advanced electrical drives and control systems. The role will focus on the development, implementation and validation of advanced motor drive and control technologies across a wide range of electrical machine topologies and applications. This includes research into permanent magnet and non-permanent magnet machine drives, high- performance control algorithms, real-time implementation, and experimental testing and validation of electrical drive systems.
About the Team
The PEMC Institute has grown exponentially and now has over 200 members, including 24 academics and circa 130 PhD students, researchers and engineers. The group offers state-of-the-art facilities spanning over 3500m², capable of handling construction and testing up to multi-megawatt power levels. PEMC is internationally recognised for excellence in electrical machines, power electronics and advanced control systems, with research activities covering design, analysis, manufacturing, control, integration and testing of advanced electrified propulsion and energy conversion systems. The role holder will become part of a strong team working within these state-of-the-art facilities on advanced electrical drive systems for aerospace, automotive, marine, power generation and future electrification technologies.
About You
We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Senior Research Fellow with strong expertise in advanced electrical drives and control systems to drive forward and support aligned research activities at Nottingham. Candidates should have significant prior research and practical experience in electrical drives and motor control, ideally including:
- Development of advanced control algorithms for electrical machines and drive systems.
- Real-time implementation of control systems on DSP, FPGA or embedded control platforms.
- Experimental testing, commissioning and troubleshooting of electrical drive systems.
- Analysis and interpretation of electrical drive and control performance data.
- Experience across a range of machine topologies, including permanent magnet and non-permanent magnet machine drives.
Experience of working on collaborative projects involving industrial partners is highly desirable. The ability to work proactively within multidisciplinary teams, contribute technically at a high level, and engage professionally with industrial collaborators is essential.
Reporting to Prof Chris Gerada, the role holder will work closely with academics, researchers and PhD students in managing and conducting research activities across a range of major programmes and projects. Prior experience of supporting or supervising postgraduate researchers and students is desirable.
The successful candidate will be dynamic, well organised and self-motivated, with a positive and collaborative attitude and the ability to work effectively across technically challenging and fast-moving research environments.
