Job summary
The post holder will join a team of five Consultant Upper GI Surgeons to support the delivery, development and future direction of Upper GI Surgical Services across Somerset. The successful candidate will be a specialist in General Surgery with expertise in Upper GI conditions, providing a comprehensive service that encompasses both elective and emergency care.
The post holder will play a key role in shaping innovative and sustainable surgical services, maximizing the use of modern facilities including the current surgical and endoscopy infrastructure, as well as contributing to the development of new services within the forthcoming surgical block and critical care expansion.

Main duties, tasks & skills required
The successful candidate will provide an Upper GI Surgery service in addition to providing a general surgery interest. Main duties are conducted at Musgrove Park Hospital with some clinics held at peripheral community hospitals.
The consultant will be expected to work within a multi-disciplinary team including a flexible job plan which can be altered by agreement to meet the needs to the service.
The consultant will need to demonstrate:
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach.
- Ability to mentor staff both medical and nursing.
- Experience of clinical risk management.
The consultant will also assume responsibility for the organization, management, diagnosis and treatment of patients in the hospital, in conjunction with colleagues across the hospital. Provide emergency cover in accordance with the department's on-call rota which would be 1:12 (and outside of the rota in exceptional circumstances) with prospective cover for leave.
