Overview
A specialist SEND provision in Leeds is recruiting an Autism and Communication Support Practitioner to join their multidisciplinary team from September. The school supports pupils with autism spectrum condition, speech and language needs, social communication difficulties, sensory processing differences and complex learning needs.
Working closely with educational staff and therapy professionals, the successful candidate will play a key role in helping pupils develop communication skills, social understanding and independence.
This is a full-time opportunity that has the potential to become a permanent role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support pupils with autism and communication needs across all areas of the curriculum.
- Implement communication strategies and intervention programmes throughout the school day.
- Support pupils with expressive language, receptive language and social communication skills.
- Adapt classroom resources and learning activities to maximise communication accessibility.
- Use visual supports, communication aids, symbols, PECS and assistive technology where appropriate.
- Facilitate opportunities for communication during lessons, social situations and structured interventions.
- Support pupils to develop confidence, independence and positive interaction skills.
- Monitor, record and evaluate progress against communication and EHCP targets.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, parents and carers to ensure consistency across settings.
- Promote pupil wellbeing, inclusion and participation in all aspects of school life.
Pre-requisites:
- Experience supporting children or young people with autism and communication needs.
- Understanding of SEND, autism and communication development.
- Knowledge of alternative communication methods and autism support strategies desirable.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Patient, supportive and highly organised approach.
- Experience within education, therapy support, childcare or SEND settings beneficial.
- Relevant qualifications in Education, SEND, Child Development, Therapy Support or equivalent experience desirable.
Pay: £95.00-£115.00 per day
