About the role
Dunham Forest Golf & Country Club is looking for an experienced and highly organised Senior Bookkeeper / Club Accountant to take responsibility for the day-to-day financial administration and accounting requirements of the Club.
This is an important and trusted role, working closely with the Club Manager, Treasurer and Management Committee. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the bookkeeping function while providing accurate and timely financial information to support the effective management of the Club.
Key responsibilities
· Maintain accurate accounting records and the general ledger.
· Manage purchase ledger, supplier invoices and payment runs.
· Manage sales ledger and credit control.
· Complete bank and merchant account reconciliations.
· Record and reconcile membership subscriptions and other member income.
· Reconcile income across the Club's activities, including green fees, golf societies, competitions, bar and catering, functions, events and sponsorship.
· Undertake payroll administration and reconciliation.
· Maintain VAT records and prepare VAT returns.
· Process accruals, prepayments and journals.
· Assist with the preparation of monthly management accounts.
· Provide financial reports and information to the Club Manager, Treasurer and Management Committee.
· Assist with annual budgets, forecasts and cash-flow information.
· Prepare year-end schedules and liaise with the Club's external accountants.
· Maintain appropriate financial controls and audit trails.
· Deal with day-to-day financial queries from suppliers, members and colleagues.
· Identify opportunities to improve and streamline the Club's accounting processes and systems.
Accounting systems
The Club currently uses Sage 50. Previous Sage 50 experience would be advantageous but is not essential for an otherwise strong candidate.
The Club is open to reviewing and upgrading its accounting software and processes, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to this.
About you
· Significant bookkeeping or accounts experience.
· Strong understanding of purchase and sales ledgers, bank reconciliations and general ledger accounting.
· Experience of VAT and VAT returns.
· Payroll and payroll reconciliation experience.
· Experience assisting with or preparing management accounts.
· Good Excel and general IT skills.
· Excellent attention to detail.
· Ability to work independently and take ownership of the accounting function.
· Good communication and organisational skills.
· A high level of discretion and confidentiality.
Experience within a golf club, members' club, hospitality, leisure or similar environment would be advantageous but is not essential. Formal accounting or bookkeeping qualifications would be beneficial, although relevant practical experience is equally important.
