The Nightshift Hygiene Operative is responsible for cleaning and sanitising livestock pens, auction rings, walkways, lairage areas, and associated facilities within the livestock mart. The role is essential in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, which ensures Animal Welfare, biosecurity, and workplace safety and prepares the mart for livestock sales and daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Pressure wash and clean cattle and sheep pens, sale rings, raceways, holding areas, and walkways.
- Remove manure, bedding, and other waste from livestock areas.
- Apply approved disinfectants in accordance with company biosecurity procedures.
- Ensure all livestock areas are clean, safe, and ready for incoming stock and scheduled sales.
- Operate pressure washers, hoses, and other cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
- Report damaged equipment, maintenance requirements, and biosecurity concerns to the team leader.
Health, Safety and Biosecurity Responsibilities
- Comply with all Health and Safety legislation, company policies, and safe working procedures.
- Follow strict biosecurity measures to minimise the risk of disease transmission between livestock consignments.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including waterproof clothing, gloves, safety boots, eye protection.
- Handle cleaning chemicals safely in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manufacturer instructions.
- Report hazards, accidents, incidents, and near misses immediately.
Skills and Experience
- Experience using pressure washing equipment is an advantage.
- Ability to work safely around livestock.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible and willing to work additional hours during busy sale periods.
Working hours will vary depending on livestock sale schedules and operational requirements.
