Job Summary
We’re looking for an experienced Second Chef / Sous Chef to join the kitchen team at The Old Glasshouse Café & Delicatessen, based within our award-winning garden centre near Beverley & Hull.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced, capable chef who enjoys being hands-on in the kitchen, working with fresh food and playing a key part in delivering consistently high standards – with the added benefit of daytime hours and no late nights.
The Role
Working closely with the Head Chef, you’ll play a key role in the day-to-day running of the kitchen, combining hands-on cooking with leading a busy service and supporting the wider kitchen team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and cooking fresh dishes across different sections of the kitchen
- Taking a lead during service, including running our open pass
- Supporting the Head Chef with the smooth day-to-day running of the kitchen
- Maintaining high standards of food quality, presentation and consistency
- Leading, supporting and providing guidance to the kitchen team
- Supporting stock control, ordering and reducing waste
- Contributing ideas for specials and menu development
- Maintaining excellent food hygiene, health & safety and kitchen standards
About You
We’re looking for an experienced chef who is equally comfortable getting stuck into preparation and cooking and taking the lead during a busy service:
You’ll ideally:
- Have proven experience working as a chef in a busy kitchen
- Be confident working across different sections and running a service
- Be able to lead, support and get the best from the team around you
- Remain organised and calm during busy periods
- Take pride in producing consistently good food
- Have a positive, reliable and hands-on approach
- Have a good understanding of food hygiene and kitchen standards
You may already be working as a Second Chef or Sous Chef, or you could be an experienced Chef de Partie ready to take the next step.
Hours & Salary
This is a 40-hour-per-week salaried role, worked across Monday to Sunday, with regular weekend working required. Shifts are generally around 8 hours, although some flexibility is required to meet the needs of the business.
Competitive salary based on experience and level of responsibility.
What We Offer
- Staff discount across the garden centre
- Uniform provided
- A friendly, supportive working environment
- The opportunity to develop and make a real contribution to the kitchen
Applicants must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK. Please note that we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
If you’re an experienced chef looking for a hands-on role where you can cook, lead a busy service and play an important part in the kitchen team, we’d love to hear from you.
