Barnsley Hospice is seeking a skilled, proactive and reliable Maintenance Operative to join our Estates Team.
About the Role
As a Maintenance Operative, you will play a vital role in ensuring our Hospice environment remains safe, compliant, welcoming and well-maintained for patients, visitors, volunteers and staff. Working across our Hospice premises, you will carry out a range of maintenance, repair and driving duties, helping to ensure our facilities operate effectively and efficiently.
This varied and hands-on role is ideal for someone with multi-trade maintenance experience who enjoys problem-solving, takes pride in their work and can work both independently and as part of a team. You will support the upkeep of our buildings and grounds, undertake planned and reactive maintenance tasks, and assist with service contractors and compliance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks across all Hospice premises.
- Undertake minor plumbing, joinery, decorating and general maintenance repairs.
- Complete compliance checks and maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Monitor and support the Legionella control programme.
- Conduct Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) and minor electrical maintenance where appropriate.
- Maintain stock levels of maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Support the upkeep of Hospice grounds, outdoor areas and car parks.
- Liaise with contractors and suppliers, ensuring work is completed to the required standards.
- Drive Hospice vehicles to support collections, deliveries and operational requirements.
- Report maintenance issues, equipment defects and structural concerns promptly.
Contract Details
- Contract: Permanent
- Hours: 30 hours per week
- Monday to Friday
- 9:00am – 3:00pm
- Participation in the maintenance on-call rota is required, involving cover on a one week in three basis.
- Salary: £13.10 - £15.41 p/h

About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a minimum of 3 years' experience in a maintenance, facilities or similar role.
- Has experience carrying out a range of maintenance tasks, including plumbing, joinery and general repairs.
- Can diagnose and resolve plumbing and heating-related issues.
- Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Is able to read and work from technical drawings and plans.
- Has good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Holds a full, clean UK driving licence and has access to a vehicle.
- Has a proactive approach and takes ownership of tasks.
- Works collaboratively and positively as part of a team.
- Shares our values of compassion, respect, integrity and professionalism.
Desirable
- Health and Safety qualification.
- Recognised Plumbing qualification.
- Experience working within the plumbing trade.
- Experience undertaking PAT testing.
