The role
Built on our award-winning apprenticeship model, we have created a bespoke three-year traineeship to develop skilled estimators and designers across our M&E and Renewables divisions. You will learn from an established team working on a portfolio of industrial, commercial and renewable energy projects, including Inverness Castle Refurbishment, Royal Dornoch Golf Club, and Beatrice Substation.
Over three years you will receive structured training that combines commercial and industrial mechanical tender bids with hands-on design experience across solar PV, heat pumps, and EV charging systems. By the end of the programme you will be producing complete Mechanical and Renewables packages independently.
Traineeship structure and salary progression
Year 1 – Foundation and basic skills (£28,000): introduction to the commercial tender process across M&E and Renewables; familiarisation with design and estimating software; completion of CSCS training; introduction to renewable energy system design (solar PV, battery storage, heat pumps and EV charging layouts); developing design skills including heat loss calculations, solar PV system design and EV charging specifications; building relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
Year 2 – Intermediate skills and learning (£30,000): completion of NVQ 3 Estimating training; managing incoming and outgoing tender enquiries and producing estimates for review; attending relevant trade shows and industry events.
Year 3 – Advanced skills and learning (£34,000): completion of NEC3 Contract and NEC Construction Programming training; undertaking tender submissions independently, end-to-end, across M&E and Renewables packages; producing complete design packages for Renewables projects; refining negotiation skills to secure work with new and existing clients.
