Project Engineer (Mechanical)
Chemring Energetics UK is a global leader in the provision of energetic material-based equipment for defence, civil defence, and key commercial markets. We are now seeking an experienced Project Engineer (Mechanical) to join our team and play a key role in delivering mechanical engineering projects that support the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of our manufacturing site.
As our Project Engineer (Mechanical), you will be responsible for delivering capital and overhead projects from concept through to commissioning, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Reporting to the Project Engineering Manager, you will develop engineering solutions, manage contractors and suppliers, oversee mechanical installations, and ensure compliance with COMAH regulations, company standards, and recognised engineering practices.
This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive engineer with strong project delivery experience who enjoys solving technical challenges, working across multiple disciplines, and driving continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities & Duties:
- Ensure all activities under your control comply with Health, Safety and Environmental legislation, as well as Company policies and procedures.
- Report unsafe acts or conditions using the Near Miss system, in accordance with responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
- Deliver mechanical engineering projects safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
- Develop engineering solutions from concept through detailed design, ensuring compliance with legislation, company standards and COMAH requirements.
- Prepare and review engineering specifications, drawings, calculations, scopes of work and technical documentation.
- Manage the procurement of mechanical equipment and services, including tendering, technical evaluation and supplier management.
- Coordinate contractors, consultants and equipment suppliers to ensure safe and efficient project delivery.
- Provide site-based construction support and oversee mechanical installation activities.
- Lead or support commissioning, start-up, testing and handover of new or modified plant and equipment.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, risk registers and progress reports.
- Ensure all projects comply with Management of Change (MoC), process safety requirements and regulatory obligations.
- Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, design reviews and risk assessments to ensure safe plant design and operation.
- Monitor contractor performance to ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, sustainability and lifecycle performance through project delivery.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and engineering records to support ongoing operation and maintenance.

Qualifications / Experience:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
- Experience delivering mechanical engineering projects.
- Experience specifying and procuring mechanical process or manufacturing equipment and associated services.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering design codes and standards.
- Experience managing contractors and suppliers.
- Proven experience across all lifecycle phases of mechanical or multi-discipline engineering projects.
- Experience working within manufacturing, process or high-hazard industries.
- NEBOSH qualification and defence industry experience are desirable.
