Allan Dolan is a well-established, independent family business that has proudly served Tavistock for over 30 years. We specialise in greeting cards, gifts, art materials and stationery, and pride ourselves on offering friendly, knowledgeable service in a welcoming environment.
We're looking for a reliable, enthusiastic Retail Sales Assistant to join our small, dedicated team. This is a varied role where no two days are the same, and you'll have the opportunity to build relationships with our regular customers while helping keep the shop looking its very best.
Working Hours
This is a part-time position averaging approximately 20 hours per week.
The role has been created primarily to provide holiday cover for our existing team, whilst also working a regular weekly pattern.
Your normal working hours will be:
- Monday: 4-hour shift (alternating weekly between 9:00am–1:00pm and 1:00pm–5:00pm)
- Tuesday – Friday: 10:00am–2:00pm (4-hour shifts)
Because the purpose of this role is to provide holiday cover, flexibility is essential.
When covering annual leave, you may be required to:
- Work alternative weekday shifts of 9:00am–1:00pm or 1:00pm–5:00pm
- Work occasional full Saturdays
- Provide additional weekday cover when required

The Role
This is a varied retail position involving customer service, merchandising and general shop duties. Responsibilities include:
- Providing friendly, knowledgeable customer service
- Helping customers choose cards, gifts, stationery and art materials
- Operating the till and processing cash and card payments
- Receiving deliveries, unpacking stock and replenishing displays
- Pricing products and maintaining attractive shop displays and window displays
- Carrying out printing, photocopying, laminating and comb binding services for customers
- Answering telephone and email enquiries
- Processing refunds and exchanges
- Maintaining a clean, tidy and welcoming shop
- Remaining vigilant to shoplifting and reporting concerns
- Undertaking any other reasonable duties required within a busy independent retail environment

- Has previous experience in a customer-facing retail environment
- Enjoys talking to people and delivering excellent customer service
- Is friendly, approachable and professional
- Can work confidently both independently and as part of a small team
- Takes pride in keeping the shop well presented
- Is organised, reliable and willing to turn their hand to a wide variety of tasks
- Is flexible and able to adapt to changing work patterns when providing holiday cover
