About the Role
Shropshire Mental Health Support (Shropshire MHS) is looking for a compassionate, experienced and resilient Mental Health Support Worker to join our team at Shropshire Sanctuary in Shrewsbury.
The Shropshire Sanctuary provides a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental out-of-hours environment for people experiencing mental health distress or crisis. We provide a non-clinical space where people can talk openly, be listened to without judgement, receive emotional support and reassurance, and access information and signposting to appropriate ongoing support.
This is a rewarding role for someone who is passionate about mental health and wants to make a genuine difference to people during some of their most challenging moments.
About Shropshire Sanctuary
We currently have vacancies for the following night shifts:
- Every other Friday night 22:30 – 09:00
- Every Saturday night 22:00 – 09:00
- Every Sunday night 22:00 – 07:00
The service provides an alternative response, where appropriate, for people who may otherwise be considered for detention under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
Our focus is on providing a calm, safe and supportive environment where individuals can reduce distress, feel heard and supported, and consider their next steps.
What You'll Do
As a Mental Health Support Worker, you will:
- Provide compassionate, person-centred support to people experiencing mental health distress or crisis.
- Create a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment where people feel listened to and respected.

- Build positive and trusting relationships with service users while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Provide information, emotional support and appropriate signposting to other services.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to changing needs, including potentially challenging situations.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers, paramedics, Police officers and other professionals.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including daily logs and relevant reports.
- Identify and communicate concerns, risks and incidents appropriately.
- Work within relevant legal, safeguarding and organisational frameworks, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- Contribute to the ongoing quality and development of the Shropshire Sanctuary service.
- Participate in regular one-to-one and group supervision and reflective practice.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is genuinely committed to supporting people experiencing mental distress and who can demonstrate:
- A minimum of three years' experience in health and social care, mental health or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience of supporting people experiencing emotional or mental health difficulties.
- Excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills.

- Confidence in using appropriate approaches to reduce anxiety and distress.
- Good self-management, organisation and time-management skills.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- A commitment to equality, diversity, dignity, choice and respect.
- A willingness to engage positively with supervision, learning and professional development.
Experience within a crisis, community or out-of-hours mental health service, or experience of working alongside mental health and emergency services would be desirable.
