We are seeking an ambitious and strategic leader to join us as Corporate Lead – Transportation. This is a pivotal role responsible influencing policy, shaping investment, and delivering major programmes that make a lasting impact on communities.
This is a high-profile leadership role where you will act as the Council’s strategic lead for transportation, ensuring Calderdale is recognised for best practice, innovation and value for money while delivering positive environmental, economic and social outcomes.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic leader to take on the role of Corporate Lead – Transportation.
As the Council’s strategic lead for transportation, you will provide leadership and direction for a multidisciplinary service of approximately 35 professionals, ensuring Calderdale is recognised for best practice, innovation and value for money.
The role is responsible for:
- Leading the development and delivery of transportation policies, strategies and delivery programmes.
- Managing annual revenue budgets in excess of £1m and a capital programme of approximately £80m
- Providing expert advice to elected members and senior managers
- Representing Calderdale at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and working with regional partners
- Driving innovation to address challenges such as congestion, road safety, air quality and climate change
- Represent Calderdale at key forums including the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, influencing regional initiatives such as Bus reform, Mass transit and Active travel
You will also contribute to the wider leadership of the Strategic Infrastructure service and support delivery of the Council’s priorities.
About You
We are looking for a dynamic, forward-thinking leader with strong technical expertise and the ability to operate effectively in a political environment.
You will:
- Have significant experience operating at a senior level in a related engineering or transport planning role
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of highway management, legislation, strategy and policy
- Have experience managing large revenue and capital budgets and delivering complex programmes
- Be skilled in influencing, negotiating and building partnerships across organisations
- Have experience advising and working with elected members
- Demonstrate excellent communication, consultation and leadership skills
- Have experience of contract procurement and management
- Be committed to innovation, customer focus and continuous improvement
Qualifications:
- Degree in a relevant area or equivalent experience
- Chartered Engineer or Transport Planning Professional Qualification or equivalent experience (desirable)
Additional Information
This is a hybrid role, combining office, home and site-based working across Calderdale. The role requires flexibility, including attendance at evening or occasional weekend meetings and participation in out-of-hours arrangements where required.
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is required (reasonable adjustments will be considered).
