Location: The Bricklayers, Newbury
Position: Sous Chef
Hours: Full-time
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Join the team at The Bricklayers
The Bricklayers is looking for a talented, reliable and ambitious Sous Chef to join our kitchen team in Newbury.
We're a busy, community-led pub with a strong focus on great food, great hospitality and creating the kind of place people genuinely want to come back to.
We're looking for someone who can be a strong second in the kitchen: someone who can lead a service, support the Head Chef, develop the team and take real ownership of standards.
This isn't a role for someone who just wants to turn up, cook and go home. We want someone who cares about the kitchen they're working in and wants to help make it better.
The Role
As Sous Chef, you'll work closely with the Head Chef and wider management team to keep the kitchen running smoothly.
You'll be responsible for:
- Leading kitchen services confidently in the Head Chef's absence
- Producing consistently high-quality food
- Supporting the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen
- Maintaining excellent food safety, hygiene and allergen standards
- Supporting stock control, ordering, wastage and GP management
- Helping to manage kitchen labour effectively
- Training, coaching and developing junior members of the kitchen team
- Making sure preparation and service standards are maintained throughout every shift
- Creating a positive, organised and professional kitchen environment
- Taking ownership when something isn't right and helping to fix it
- Working collaboratively with the front-of-house team to deliver a brilliant guest experience
Who We're Looking For
You'll ideally already have experience as a Sous Chef or strong Junior Sous Chef within a busy pub, restaurant or hospitality environment.
More importantly, we're looking for someone who:
- Is passionate about good food
- Can remain calm and organised during a busy service
- Leads by example
- Has strong kitchen and food safety standards
- Understands the commercial side of running a kitchen
- Is comfortable taking responsibility
- Communicates well with both kitchen and front-of-house teams
- Enjoys developing other people
- Wants to progress and grow with the business
- Brings ideas, energy and a positive attitude to work
