The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Technician to join the Terminal Engineering team at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. You will work as part of a multi-skilled engineering team responsible for maintaining the critical systems that support the safe and efficient operation of a busy 24/7 airport.
This position is well suited to someone who has completed their electrical studies and is ready to take the next step into an operational engineering career. It also offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced electrician who is looking to broaden their skills and develop within a varied, multi-disciplinary maintenance environment.
Training and Development
We are committed to developing the successful candidate through a structured programme of workplace training, system familiarisation and supervised practical experience. As part of the training package, the Airport will fully fund a HNC in Operations Engineering, providing a recognised higher-level qualification alongside valuable hands-on experience.
You will be supported to develop competence across a wide range of airport engineering systems, with progression based on demonstrated knowledge, practical capability and safe working practices.
About You
Applicants must have successfully completed a City & Guilds Level 3 2365 Diploma in Electrical Installations, or an equivalent recognised electrical qualification.
We welcome applications from both recently qualified candidates and experienced electricians. Previous employment in a maintenance role is advantageous but is not essential, as role-specific training will be provided.
You should also be able to demonstrate:
- A strong interest in developing a broad engineering skill set beyond your core electrical discipline.
- A practical, methodical approach to fault-finding and problem-solving.
- Good computer literacy and the ability to learn new maintenance and asset-management systems.
- Effective communication and teamworking skills.
- A responsible attitude to safety and the ability to follow procedures in an operational environment.
- The ability to remain calm and work effectively under pressure.
Experience or knowledge of conveyor systems, automated barriers and gates, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), plumbing and water systems, fire alarms, air conditioning or HVAC systems would be beneficial, but is not essential.
The Role
Working under the direction of a Shift Engineering Team Leader, you will:
- Carry out planned preventive, remedial and reactive maintenance on critical systems across the airport estate.
- Assist with fault diagnosis, repairs, testing and the safe return of equipment to service.
- Complete maintenance records and other administrative duties to the required departmental standards.
- Support effective stock control and the management of engineering spares and materials.
- Communicate effectively with engineering colleagues, operational teams, contractors and other stakeholders.
- Comply with the Airport's Safety Management System and all relevant policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Participate fully in the training, competency and development programme associated with the role.
Systems you may work on
- Life-safety systems, including fire detection and alarm systems.
- Baggage conveyor and handling systems.
- Security systems, automated doors, barriers and access-control equipment.
- Electrical distribution and lighting systems.
- Plumbing, water and drainage systems.
- Air-conditioning, ventilation and HVAC systems.
- Other building-services and operational engineering assets across the airport estate.
Working Pattern
The role operates on a 4-on, 4-off shift pattern consisting of 12-hour shifts: two day shifts followed by two night shifts. The successful candidate must be able to work this pattern within a 24/7 operational environment. There may also be occasional opportunities for overtime.
What we offer...
- A fully funded HNC in Operations Engineering as part of your development programme.
- Structured workplace training and supervised experience across a broad range of engineering systems.
- The opportunity to build a long-term engineering career in a varied and operationally important environment.
- A supportive, multi-skilled team with access to experienced engineers and technical specialists.
