What we are looking for:
The Used Car Buyer is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and purchasing high‑quality used vehicles that meet the dealership’s stock requirements. The role combines market knowledge, negotiation skill, and an analytical eye for vehicle condition and resale potential. Success is measured by stock turn, margin performance, and the consistency of supply.
Key Responsibilities
- Vehicle Sourcing — Identify and acquire used vehicles through auctions, trade-ins, private sellers, fleet disposals, and online marketplaces.
- Appraisal & Valuation — Inspect vehicles for mechanical condition, cosmetic quality, service history, and market desirability; determine accurate purchase values.
- Negotiation — Secure vehicles at competitive prices while maintaining strong supplier relationships.
- Market Analysis — Track pricing trends, demand patterns, and competitor stock to guide buying decisions.
- Compliance Checks — Ensure all vehicles meet legal, safety, and documentation standards (HPI, MOT, mileage verification, etc.).
- Stock Planning — Work with sales managers to maintain an optimal mix of vehicles aligned with customer demand.
- Supplier Management — Build and maintain relationships with traders, leasing companies, and auction houses.
- Reporting — Provide regular updates on purchases, margins, stock levels, and market conditions.
Required Skills & Experience
- Automotive Knowledge — Strong understanding of makes, models, common faults, and market desirability.
- Valuation Expertise — Ability to assess true market value quickly and accurately.
- Negotiation Skills — Confident negotiator with a commercial mindset.
- Analytical Ability — Comfortable using data, pricing tools, and market insights.
- Attention to Detail — Thorough approach to inspections and documentation checks.
- Full UK Driving Licence — Essential for test drives and vehicle movements.
Desirable Experience
- Auction Buying — Experience purchasing from BCA, Manheim, or similar.
- Trade Network — Existing relationships with traders, fleets, or leasing companies.
- Retail Automotive Background — Experience in sales, appraisal, or stock management.
Work Pattern: Monday to Friday, plus weekend availability
Salary: Competitive + Commission and Bonus Structure
