£14.50 per hour | Approx. 25 hours per week | Tuesday–Friday | Weekends off
Proper scratch cooking. Early finishes. Every weekend off.
Job Summary
We're looking for an experienced chef to join our small craft kitchen on an interim basis while we recruit our next permanent Head Chef.
Most weeks you'll work approximately 6:30am–12 noon Tuesday to Friday, with one longer day each week working through lunch service and finishing around 3–4pm.
This could suit someone looking for better balance and fewer hours, or an experienced chef wanting a reliable second income alongside other work.
About Pip’s
People don’t visit us because we’re convenient.
They travel to us.
We’re known for producing consistently excellent homemade food in a relaxed, quirky setting where quality comes before pretension.
We’re proud of what we’ve built, but we’re not standing still.
The role
You'll be responsible for independently cooking our breakfast service to our quality and wait-time standards, with helping hands available during particularly busy periods.
Alongside breakfast, you'll prepare the food and mise en place needed for breakfast and lunch and make sure the kitchen is well stocked and prepared for our busiest Saturday service.
This is a real craft-kitchen role. We cook from scratch, care about ingredients and take pride in doing things properly. This isn't a reheating-and-assembly job.
Just as importantly, you won't be expected to carry the kitchen on your shoulders.
You'll be working alongside and supporting an experienced interim Head Chef, with an experienced CDP already in the team. The kitchen is well managed; we're looking for someone who can confidently own their breakfast service and prep responsibilities as part of that team.
We're looking for someone who
- Is an experienced, capable chef
- Can confidently run breakfast service independently
- Enjoys proper scratch cooking
- Is organised and strong on prep
- Works efficiently while maintaining quality and service times
- Has good food-safety knowledge
- Is reliable, calm and takes pride in leaving the kitchen properly set up
Hours
Approximately 25 hours per week.
Typical pattern:
Tuesday–Friday: approximately 6:30am–12 noon
One day each week normally continues through lunch service until approximately 3–4pm.
No regular evenings. No Saturdays. No Sundays.
Additional shifts may occasionally be available if you want extra hours and earnings, but these are genuinely optional and are not part of the contracted role.
Pay
£14.50 per hour
At approximately 25 hours per week, base earnings are around £362.50 per week.
Tips are paid separately and have consistently averaged approximately £1.50–£2.50 per hour over the past two years, although they are variable and cannot be guaranteed.
Based on the normal 25-hour working week and historic tip levels, this represents illustrative total cash earnings of approximately £400–£425 per week, equivalent to around £20,800–£22,100 annually if worked for a full year.
As this is an interim 3–6 month position, actual earnings will naturally depend on the length of the contract and hours worked.
Contract
This is an interim fixed-term role, initially expected to last 3–6 months, while we recruit and transition to our next permanent Head Chef.
If you're an experienced chef who still wants to cook properly, but would like hospitality to fit around the rest of your life rather than consume it, we'd really like to hear from you.
